Would love some suggestions on German boys names that work well in English. I generally like short and snappy over long and flowing but open to anything.

DD's German ex and his friends and brothers (all young men) were:
Felix, Lucas, Alex, Nico (x2), Leon and Adam

All suitably versatile and travel proof names!

That said, I've always harboured an immense soft spot for Wolfgang!

Dh is German. I love the name Henning but didn't get to use it as I had 2 girls.

Yes. Georgina is pronounced Gay-or-geena.

Actually more like Geh-or-geena.

What does Rory sound like in Germany?

God why does it not quote if you press reply?

The R is just a different sound and if pronounced English which it would be lots of people would struggle to get it right. Same with J sounds.

Please not Heinz, makes me think of Baked Beans!

There's a German name pronounced "gay-org" is that Georg?

Yes. Georgina is pronounced Gay-or-geena.

Linus - pronounced Leanus not Line-us as in Peanuts

A German guy I knew with a name I always liked was Carsten. I think it works well in English. Markus is really nice too (just say "with a K") if misspelling is an issue.

NewUserNewName · 28/01/2024 22:53

I haven’t seen Leon and Roman mentioned yet.

be careful with names like Lu(c)kas/Mark(/c)us, as you’d constantly need to correct the spelling in one country

I know a family who live in the UK with one German parent, the boys are called Ben and Lars

This could out me but my dh is half German and is Jürgen. Football has made the name better known. Clearly I love it, but none of our kids have German names on dh's insistence! It's hard enough dealing with the convoluted German surname!!

Yes agree with him. I would definitely not go for eg Jürgen for exactly that reason. Similarly would not call him eg Rory as lovely as it is as if we moved to Germany it would get butchered 😂

I think Rudi is super cool but I’d worry that he’d get English kids making ‘rude’ jokes or sth?

I really doubt it. I know a couple of young English boys called Rudy/Rudi, it's far from unheard of. And i don't think kids make fun of names so much these days, there's too much variety.

I know a German Timo, which I quite like.
