So I found out today there’s a boy in a young relatives class whose actual name is Peculiar! Why on earth would someone do this to a child. He has a brother with an equally awful name too. 😳

I actually think it's quite cool, like a gothic detective or something 😂 I'm not sure I'd use it given I'm not in any way Nigerian, but honestly it's better than some others I've heard. I'd rather be a Peculiar than a Nevaeh.

The poor kid. I'm guessing the parents aren't English?

My friend met someone whose Christian name was Ordinary, he was from Nigeria.

One can only imagine he does, but his parents might have considered that they live in the UK..

Maybe they didn't live in the UK when he was born?

Peculiar used to mean special or unique in English - the meaning has morphed over time. It still retains its original meaning in Nigerian English, and there are some Nigerians named Peculiar (virtue names like Patience, Promise, Innocent, Blessing, Comfort, Lenient etc are quite popular). Does your son's classmate have Nigerian heritage?
