So I found out today there’s a boy in a young relatives class whose actual name is Peculiar! Why on earth would someone do this to a child. He has a brother with an equally awful name too. 😳

And another one called Desire. Took a bit of getting used to, but I like it now.

There's a huge Congolese fella working at my local Sains Local. Absolutely massive, he is. He's called Innocent.

DS2’s has a huge support worker, who was born in Zimbabwe, called Precious. I think it’s lovely.

Innocent is a name from early Christianity. Iirc there were a few early popes who chose this name. It's found in Orthodox Christiality too, with the Russian version being Innokentiy.

I used to work in a public library in an area with a big Nigerian population, there were two twin boys who came to baby rhyme time called Fortune and Favour.

Percy for short ?

Crunched · 07/09/2024 23:03

I like it. I can see Pec being a cool nickname. We had a babysitter called Delicious - beautiful name, beautiful lady.

Holidayhell22 · 07/09/2024 22:59

Could be worse, could be Old Peculiar.

miniaturepixieonacid · 07/09/2024 21:47

It's unfortunate in the UK but can't be helped if it's retained its original meaning in another culture and the family have moved. If they lived in the UK when he was born it's a bit of an odd thing to do but otherwise, just one of those things. It could happen with Western names too. I used to do quite a lot of work in Brazil and one lady I went with was called Coco. The children we were working with thought it was hilarious - coco in Portuguese is poo!

As @Doublebiscuit77 says, 'peculiar' used to mean 'special'. It's used that way in the Bible. There was a famous 19th century religious movement called the 'Peculiar People' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peculiar_People
