Looking for some more potential boys' names that are unusual but not out there.

The current list for names includes:

Zephyr
Oakley
Phoenix
Jax
Marley

Any ideas welcome? 😊

Can you imagine working in an office, or seeing a mechanic, or having an every day conversation, with a man called Zephyr or Pheonix? When he's middle aged, balding and a few stone over weight?

Castiel?
Gideon?
Thadeus?
Balthazar?

Tbh if in 20 years time you're discombobulated by a mechanic / lawyer / astronaut / passerby called Zephyr, you're gonna have bigger issues given the variety of names out there now

Maybe he'll keep his health and his waistline. Maybe 90 Zephyr will be the ladies man in the old people's home.

I don't see what's worse about a mechanic named Zephyr than Jack or why is recoil at a casual convo with Phoenix but not Oliver.

Maybe you need wider horizons.

I see Zephyr more as a lounge lizard in the Leslie Phillips tradition!

They are zombie threads and most people don't like them being resurrected. Just start a new thread.

IggyAce · 29/10/2025 20:58

.

Daddyfool998 · 29/10/2025 20:56

I'm not sure they are 'zombie threads'. They still feature on Google. When I was thinking baby names, I trailed through these lists hunting names myself. So with everyone else, my aim is to be helpful for people searching for unusual baby names. I don't want to waste the hard work I put in.

But why are you asking?

DinaofCloud9 · 29/10/2025 18:58

Why are you posting on zombie threads? @daddyfool998

Btw, Jax the cat is a rescue and we had him at 8 weeks. His foster carer had named him Bruce… I think we did him a favour, Jax is a much better name!

OzziePopPop · 14/01/2024 03:35

We have a cat called Jax (loved the name, not having any more kids though!) and I find nicknames difficult. The kids use Jaxi or Jacksie which I have informed them means arse in our area so isn’t appropriate. I do call him ‘that bastard cat’ quite often though and DD (17) calls him ‘the devil cat’ so I guess calling him ‘arse’ or equivalent isn’t that bad….

in short, OP I love the name Jax but unless you want to nickname your child Jaxi/Arse, you might want to go with Jaxon/Jackson, nn Jax!

Hey OP. Some great names on here. I just came to say I really get you wanting something different to people you know and possibly the names you hear often. I was so fed up of hearing same old same old names... I find they are all so samey now. I went for something different for our DD and love it although some won't. When you ask on MN you'll always get harsh opinions; there are a diverse range of people on here sharing opinions and they may not be people of the same mind/style as you. It's good to get some insight on a name that may have a really bad association that slipped your mind or something along those lines but overall I think the majority of opinions are very dated, personally. I think your choices are brilliant and there's lots more listed similar to your style too. Go for what makes you happy :) xx

There's a lot of unusual names that are very usual now, are either you or the dad from a specific heritage? Might be worth going down that route as they would very likely not be super common depending where you are. For instance Angus and Gillian not super common in southern England.
My suggestions on names I've not come across that often with my 2.5 year old:
Ellis/Elias
Cosmo
Maverick
Mac
Magnus
Rudi
Leander
Levi
Nico
Jet
Logan
Torrin
Torben

Love Jax though!

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 13/01/2024 14:02

@Snugglemonkey it's my child's middle name, named after their grandfather too.

I just haven't heard of it as a first name for a while
