Calling a baby Quentin!

Ooookkkkay, so my friend's going to call her little boy Quentin! She knows I hate it but I know she hates my chosen baby name and neither of us care, we both find it quite funny. Is anyone out there a fan of Quentin? Or do you think slightly weirdo 50 year old who wears a mismatch of tweed and mustard cord trousers?

Think Quentin could be carried off by the right person. Thats the risk though there is no way of knowing how the person will turn out. My parents wanted to call my younger sister a funky name but they lost their nerve. She turned out to be lively and bubbly and could have carried it off but no way of knowing when she was a newborn.

Oh I know a baby Algernon, Algie for short.

Am not going to criticise though as actually think thats much more interesting than the Jack and Tom route that the majority go for. If I hear of one more Jack I shall...yawn.

Basil is vile. My God. And Clive is so...so...straight. It's a bank manager's name. Anyone called Clive will inevitably end up playing golf badly. Quentin is better than either of those, but still poncy.

I have a lovely university friend called Quentin, who like grannyslipper's friend also calls himself Q (are they they same person, grannyslippers? Does yours have ginger hair (what's left of it) and a double-barrelled surname?)

Oh yes, I think Basil is worse. What about Clive? I used to go out with a Clive. When people asked me what my boyfriend's name was, I would go Er,um and change the subject. They must have thought Erum was quite an unusual name.

no no no no no. My friend called her little boy Basil though, which is possibly worse. It's a tough call.

The only Quentin I have ever met is Quentin Letts who writes for the Daily Mail. I knew him slightly at University and he was pleasingly eccentric in a young fogeyish sort of way.

Quentin is quite popular in France at the mo (pronounced approx Kon-tan)

Can't say I like it though, tis a bit poncey from an anglophone perspective.

Woody is the other end of the scale. Whimsical and cartoon-y IMO.

I do not really think it appropriate unless he is your fifth child as it is from the Latin for fifth. But who cares about that, my dh's name means Brave in Battle or something like that and he's never been into battle.

in the last few years I've met an amazing Quentin - buff, frighteningly clever and an uberdad. If you like it, great. I do think it takes some living up to though.
