Hello folks,

Stuck between these two names. 😫

Sara pronounced SAH-RA (not Sarah) or Cara. Which one do you prefer?

Does anyone use the accent in the name? So Cára

SleepPrettyDarling · 11/11/2023 00:43

Cara is Irish for friend, and I’ve always thought it a lovely name. Pronounced to rhyme with Lara!

MammaWeasel · 11/11/2023 00:41

Cara all day long. Sara will often get confused with Sarah.

salamithumbs · 11/11/2023 00:38

Cara!

theduchessofspork · 10/11/2023 22:42

Sara, it’s very elegant

StarlightLime · 10/11/2023 16:56

Cara.

Cara, but mainly because Sara will mean she spends her whole life correcting people who spell and pronounce it Sarah or Zara! ( I have a friend with this name and it drives her potty!)

Same choice for same reasons!

I prefer Sara. I dislike Cara.

I like both pronunciations of Clara but in 2023 the most popular pronunciation of Clara in England is "Clah-ra" (not sure about other parts of the UK).

Similarly, Sophia is more commonly pronounced Sof-ee-ya as opposed to Sof-eye-a these days, and Mar-ee-a and Mar-ee have taken over from Mar-eye-a and Mah-ree as the accepted English pronunciations of Maria and Marie.

pinkdelight · 08/11/2023 07:19

Cara. I like Sara too but Cara is cooler.

KnickerlessParsons · 08/11/2023 07:19

Cara. I also like Mara and Tara.

tokesqueen · 08/11/2023 07:01

Cara.
Also love Zara

KirstenBlest · 08/11/2023 06:53

The Clair-a pronunciation is much nicer.

@KirstenBlest There’s no way that anybody in the UK would pronounce it as Clair-a. It’s a very American thing. Clara is a lovely name

No it's not a an American thing, Clair-a used to be the standard British pronunciation, then the name dropped out of use (replaced by Clare/Claire) and when it came back into fashion over the last decade or so the European pronunciation of 'Clah-ra' was used and became fashionable.

I had an ancient great-aunt Clara (Clair-a),, to rhyme with Sarah, a lot of people did. I prefer the sound overall, softer sound.

Strokethefurrywall · 08/11/2023 00:25

absolutely Cara!

KirstenBlest · 07/11/2023 23:49

@MaloneMeadow , did you mean to be rude? Hate the name anyway.

MaloneMeadow · 07/11/2023 23:47

@KirstenBlest the vast majority of the British public is not going to assume it’s clair-a, get a grip. Sincerely, the parent of a Clara!

KirstenBlest · 07/11/2023 23:41

@MaloneMeadow , you've obviously not studied David Copperfield by Charles Dickens.

There have been threads on here with the OP hoping to use Clara without knowing that the name gets said to rhyme with Lara.

What about Clara No. Cla-ra or Clair-a?

I much prefer Sara to Cara, but I like Zara better than both.
