Thoughts on Ella?

Not pregnant at the moment but I’ve been given the all clear on my fertility (stage 3 endo & cysts were removed). While I was under anesthetic, I dreamed of having a newborn daughter called Ella

It wasn’t a name I’ve ever considered, but now it’s just stuck in my head. My mother has always loved the name too, and I was stuck on finding an “honor” name for her (as she hates her own name). Popularity or being considered “boring” isn’t an issue for me either

@KirstenBlest @LambMomo No, I absolutely wouldn’t use those middle names! They’re lovely, but not my taste at all.

I just find it unsubstantial and sort of nothingy. It's pretty, I'll give it that, but not strong.

Aren't they usually Ella May or Ellie May, with or without a hyphen?
Ella is much nicer than Ava, which I don't like at all.

I think partly what makes it dull is it’s always paired with Rose/Grace/May. Which are the filler middle names for girls currently.

As I said, how common/popular a name is doesn’t bother me. It also doesn’t bother me if people consider it “dull” or “blah” because I’d rather that than names these days that are “unique” (code for “what were your parents thinking?”)

There were 240 girls born in Ireland last year called Ella, and 270 called Ava, which is probably my second choice at the moment 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

I have an Elysia that we shorten to Ella. Gives her more options growing up.

It just sounds like half a name to me. Like ending of Isabella, Arabella, Daniella etc.

And personally I dislike long, flowery names like that.

But it's popular, so a lot of people obviously like it, and it's not horrible or anything. And I prefer it to my own name actually Grin

I have an Ella, she loves her name, I love her name, her best friend is Ella.
Classical, elegant and beautiful.

I really like it - I’m the same as you OP! Never would’ve considered it before but for some reason I’m now quite drawn to it. It feels elegant and classy to me whilst still being nice and simplistic. Normally I’d be put off by a very popular name but for some reason it feels different - in 19 year old DD’s year group they are 7 girls called Ella! A lot of them are actually called Isabella though and shorten it.

Pretty but overused. A bit insubstantial and there are lots of Ellies and names starting with El.

Ooh, I think its very over used! My 20 yo had 3 Ella's in their class and i still hear Ella/Ellie among younger kids.

I think as a diminutive it would give the child the option to differentiate: Arabella, annabella, isabella, Ellen, etc

On a personal level I think it's the worse name ever. I don't know why I have such hatred for it though. Saying that though I can appreciate its a good name and if popularity doesn't bother you then go for it

I really like Ella, it’s popular for a reason and not as overused as some names at the moment.
