I dont understand these responses, it is a common enough name for boys where I teach in London, no one bats an eyelid, certainly no bullying. I am in a large secondary, and can think of 3 off the top of my head - all boys.

I agree Angela or Angelo is nicer sounding

There's a girl in the school my kids go to called Florida and she's teased mercilessly. The mum is now regretting her name choice and is thinking of changing it by deed poll.

I've known both boy and girl Angels.

The boy pronounced it An-hell (it wasn't An-hell but I can't think how else to type the pronunciation! 🫣).

The first main vampire in Buffy is called Angel and he gets a spin off show as well lol When he turns evil it changes to Angelus so that could work I guess

If you are in the UK I’d suggest Angelo instead. I don’t know anyone called Angell so only from Tess.

I think he would be bullied OP. It makes me think of the song ‘A boy named Sue’, there are some names that you just shouldn’t use for boys as they are too feminine.

What about the names if male angels but not Angel itself?

Michael, Gabriel, Rafael, Uriel etc

It doesn't matter what you like, it's very unlikely a 16 year old boy would like being called Angel.

Makes me think of Angel Clare from tess of the durbervilles and he was a right bastard.
having said that, I do quite like it, and I do think kids are much more open about names nowadays. 30 years ago I’d have said a hard no because of bullying, I don’t think so much now.

In my country we use Angelo as the male version of Angela.
It's a normal name here, but in the Uk I do think it is more out there as a choice.
When a name is commonly used you tend to disassociate the name from the actual meaning, and not have preconceptions of the person with the name.
If a name is very rare then this doesn't happen and people notice the difference. So however your child behaves , then some comment on their behaviour and the name Angel will be inevitable.

I know an elderly male Angel, but he is Spanish. I think it's lovely, but I think these days it wouldn't go down well.

I used to work with a guy called Angel, his brother was called Jesus. I think they had Spanish origins iirc. It was 35 years ago and I’ve never forgotten him so it’s certainly a memorable name!
He hated it btw.

Angelo might work better for a boy.
