Which name do you prefer and why?

Eleanor. Celeste = Lester

Eleanor for me.
Do you like..
Celina
Celia
Ellen
Mary-Ellen
Cecile
Cicely
Celestine
Celandine - meaning Swallow/bird
Sandrine
Sally

Both are absolutely gorgeous. Eleanor would be my choice though as there is more nickname flexibility. The Celeste that I knew went by ‘Lessie’ as a nickname which isn’t particularly nice in my opinion!

Waferbiscuit · 09/10/2024 08:20

Celeste. Far too many Ellies and Ellas out there!

FayCarew · 09/10/2024 08:18

ZOMBIE THREAD

FayCarew · 09/10/2024 08:17

@sadeightiesthrowback ,I wasn't upset, it's just that sometimes the threads are ancient. We're not hostile on here really, just a bit blunt.
If the thread is something like PND-related name regret, it might be distressing for the OP.
There's one incident when someone replied to her own thread that was several years asking if the OP had found out how best to tackle something as it was an issue she had. It was funny. IIRC it was in Housekeeping.

Eleanor

Eleanor

@sadeightiesthrowback ,it happens and often there will be a pile up of posts about how trashy/naff/meh the name is, only the baby was named quite some time ago.

We don't know if OP was naming a baby or about to, but the Babar and Cileste comments might be a bit hurtful if little Celeste is now a 1 year old.

@FayCarew thanks for the acknowledgment.
Yes it does happen as shortly after I posted I found someone else had started a thread about just that.
So all day I've been checking the date that the thread began 😏 LOL.
I get what you're saying, and why you were upset, it's all good.

Bestfootfwd · 08/10/2024 23:37

I love both your choices, but would go with Celeste as it is less popular.

KayEmAy · 08/10/2024 23:27

Celeste all day! It's beautiful and classy but fresher to me than Eleanor

Eleanor is a classic and has some very interesting historical namesakes (Aquitaine, Roosevelt and even the Beatles song). I’m sure there must be a famous historical Celeste other than the literary Elephant but none immediately sprung to mind.

There are also so many potential diminutives with Eleanor, that she has a very varied choice if for some reason she doesn’t like the name (in fact the only names I can think of with more are Elizabeth and Margaret).

sadeightiesthrowback · 08/10/2024 11:48

@FayCarew First of all, my apologies for the mistake and for inconveniencing you and anyone else.

I'm new to MN, I posted on this thread because it was there I guess. I didn't look at the dates ( which I see now) when posters before me posted.
In fact, I have no idea how that happened. Not sure how to make sure it doesn't happen again; any tips on how to avoid that? Again, I realize that was a mistake, and I apologize, thanks for pointing it out @FayCarew.

FayCarew · 08/10/2024 07:10

Why did you re-open an old thread?
@sadeightiesthrowback

IAmAFirestarter · 08/10/2024 07:02

OLD THREAD ALERT

WonderingWanda · 08/10/2024 07:00

Celeste sounds like a contraceptive.

Eleanor is quite formal unless you are going to shorten to Ellie.

FayCarew · 08/10/2024 06:57

I don't like Celeste at all, makes me thing of Babar the Elephant. Eleanor is OK but a bit dull.

CurlewKate · 08/10/2024 06:33

Eleanor is lovely with lots of lovely shortenings. (I adore Nell!)

Celeste is too cutesy and frilly-who would choose to be a 50 year old Celeste?

CookieMonster28 · 08/10/2024 06:24

Find Eleanor boring and bland IMO. Celeste is ok!

AtmosAtmos · 08/10/2024 06:20

I like both. Celeste reminds me of the Marie Celeste so maybe avoid Mary or Marie as middle.

shoopshoopdedoo · 08/10/2024 06:12

Eleanor, with Nell as a nickname if you don’t like Ellie.

I find Celeste a bit frilly/contraceptive-y.

sadeightiesthrowback · 07/10/2024 21:05

Eleanor always has a nice sound to it but for some reason to me it seems old-fashioned however, there are quite a few ok nicknames that could be used,: El, Ellie, Lenore, Lena, Leni.
I like Celeste better however.

bleuclair · 08/09/2023 13:55

Eleanor is beautiful and classic. I like Nora for short if that's not too much of a stretch.

Celeste is sweet (Babar) but reminds me of the old contraceptive pill with similar name, Cileste, or the naff 90s pop duo.

Seriously79 · 08/09/2023 13:49

Celeste is lovely, but remind me of a pill I used to take.
