Roll up and give your best ONS Baby Names 2022 predictions!

It’s that time again. The ONS baby name data for England and Wales in 2022 is due to be published any day now and MNers tend to be pretty spot on with their predictions.

To help, here’s a reminder of the top tens for boys and girls from 2021:

1 Noah
2 Oliver
3 George
4 Arthur
5 Muhammad
6 Leo
7 Harry
8 Oscar
9 Archie
10 Henry

1 Olivia
2 Amelia
3 Isla
4 Ava
5 Ivy
6 Freya
7 Lily
8 Florence
9 Mia
10 Willow

The Scottish data for 2022 has been out since March and the top tens (well, top 11 for boys) for Scotland were:

1 Noah
2 Jack
3 Leo
4 Harris
5 Luca
6 Oliver
7 Rory
8 Archie
9= Theo
9= Alfie
9= James

1 Olivia
2 Isla
3 Freya
4 Millie
5 Emily
6 Amelia
7= Grace
7= Sophie
9= Ella
9= Ava

The biggest climbers in Scotland were Luca and Maeve, and I certainly expect the latter to make a significant jump in the E&W data too.

Let’s have your predictions, please!

Find it weird I can't find the name Rufus on the boys list (definitely out of top 100!) and yet I know SO many under 10 in my area.

Rufus was 388th, with 109 of them registered in 2022. If you look at tab 6 it shows every name registered 3 or more times that year. Use the search function to find a specific name.

Finally! Weirdly upset that Charles has dropped out the Top 100 - it’s been there for over a century. Wonder if that means William will eventually drop out too once he becomes King ? (That would be an even greater shock since it’s always been top 50 plus the nations love for Shakespeare etc).

No surprise about Ottilie and Ophelia and Otis ( or indeed Olivia, Theo/Theodore, Arlo etc not going anywhere either ) , guess everyone wants that trendy letter. Wondering what other “O” names will rise soon - I think that Octavia will definitely keep rising but it’s hard to think for boys… maybe Orion or Ivo or Jago?

BoleynMemories13 · 17/05/2024 16:03

Only had a quick glance so far in my lunch break but no major shocks from what I could see? Only looked at the top 100 so far though.

The major jumps will come in 2023 and 2024 I think after people have waited so long for this set of data. Names like Ottille and Ophelia, which jumped quite a bit to make it into the top 100 this time, will continue to soar as those naming 2023 and early 2024 babies continued to think they weren't choosing a top 100 name when in fact they have been for the past 2 years.

purpleme12 · 17/05/2024 13:14

I don't understand why they are releasing it so late?

toastofthetown · 17/05/2024 13:12

Orangeglows · 17/05/2024 12:57

Do we know when the 2023 data will be released? Hopefully not another year

According to this FOI request, provisionally July 2024. According to this one Summer/Autumn 2024. Others just say "in due course". Based on this year I'd be v surprised by a July release.

I've also put in my Google Drive copies of the full dataset in my google drive, maybe that will work for anyone who can't access the ONS file
Boys - copy of ONS file - full list of names used 2022
Girls - copy of ONS file - full list of names used 2022

Hopefully people can see that, if they want to view the names outside the top hundred (until Darkgreener updates)

Never mind. I’ve just used this and found on the page 😂

SemperIdem · 17/05/2024 12:19

Can’t believe Olivia is still no.1, it’s a nice name but it’s not that nice!

Not surprised to see the jump for Theodore and Theo, lots and lots of little ones everywhere.

Surely it’s going in 2023? 😂. I agree it’s nice but for 7 years running!

Do they still have the feature where you can search for a name and it will tell you where it ranked? (For those outside the top 100

Thank you for the update! I've been waiting on it to check a few names, front runner is Eliza (53) at present for our 3 day old baby girl, Alice (38) is also on our list.

purpleme12 · 17/05/2024 11:40

Yes it's Eloise! 😂
Always stayed out of the top 100!
Mine was born in 2013 mind

Thanks

My child's name has always stayed just out of the top 100 till now

ah, which one? I was expecting Nova, Ophelia or Ottlie there this time. Eloise surprised me because it left the top hundred about 20 years ago and that tracks with the Eloise's I know. None younger than teenagers. And Fatima has actually been used more before in previous years, but as the popular names get less popular, names which stay around the same number of uses get higher by default.

purpleme12 · 17/05/2024 10:15

Yes it doesn't work for me.

I've just come across this thread

Why do they only tell us now about baby names in 2022?

And I clicked on the link on the previous post but can't seem to get on the top 100 names still! 😭

If you click on these links here, download the Excel dataset, the full list is on Tab 6 😊

Noah was the most popular boys' name in England and Wales for the second year in a row, while Olivia remained the top name for girls for the seventh year in a row.

Isabella replaced Willow in the top 10 names for girls, while Theodore, Theo and Freddie replaced Harry, Archie and Henry in the top 10 names for boys.
Muhammad was the most popular boys' name in four out of nine English regions. Olivia was the top girls' name for every English region and Wales, except London where Amelia was the most popular girls' name.

Leon, Elias, Musa, Axel and Ibrahim were new entries to the top 100 for boys in 2022. Meanwhile, Charles, Harvey, Ollie and Nathan all dropped out of the top 100.

New entries to the top 100 for girls were Ophelia, Ottilie, Eloise, Nova and Fatima, while Beatrice, Anna, Holly, Heidi and Amber all left the top 100.
Baby names of Welsh origin featured among the most popular in Wales in 2022, with Mali, Seren and Eira among the top 50 for girls and Arthur, Osian, Elis, Harri and Jac among the top 30 for boys.
Top 10 boys' names England and Wales, 2022

  1. Noah
  2. Muhammad
  3. George
  4. Oliver
  5. Leo
  6. Arthur
  7. Oscar
  8. Theodore
  9. Theo
  10. Freddie

Top 10 girls' names England and Wales, 2022

  1. Olivia
  2. Amelia
  3. Isla
  4. Ava
  5. Lily
  6. Ivy
  7. Freya
  8. Florence
  9. Isabella
  10. Mia

Commenting on today's findings, James Tucker from the Office for National Statistics said:
"Noah was the most popular name for boys in 2022, for the second year in a row, having replaced Oliver at the top in 2021. Oliver has now slipped to fourth most popular boys' name, behind Muhammad and George.

"Olivia remained the most popular girls' name in 2022, having held the top spot since 2016. In second and third place for the girls it's Amelia and Isla, both unchanged from 2021.

"Theodore, Theo and Freddie are three new entries into the top 10 boys' names in 2022. Isabella is the only new entry into the girls' top 10."

Full datasets should be in the Data tab, but I can only see 2021 at the moment.

Noooooogsh · 13/05/2024 13:04
