Maxim or Maksim

Possible boy’s name - I want a name that honours Maximilian but don’t like Maximilian, Maximus, or Maxwell. Max is cute but I want a longer name as my other children have longer names. I love these two but think I prefer it spelled with a ‘k’ as it can give the option Mak as a nickname as well as Max (which I also love!). Your thoughts? And also, would it pair well with a twin sister named:

  • Rosa
  • Genevieve
Something else? And any ideas for other boys name it goes with?

I instantly thought of the lads magazine and would find it odd to meet a baby called Maxim because it was quite notorious as a publication and I never knew it was also a first name. I like the Maksym spelling.

We named our son Maksym. It is Ukrainian, my husband is from there. We call him Maks.

You say max is too short compared to your other children’s names but Rosa is short so if that’s your concern then go with Rosa and it won’t be an issue.

They don’t need to match. But given the huge difference in length and style, they sound a bit comical when said together. Which of course I don’t want.

Maksim is a very Russian name, people may think that you have a connection to Russia. It that's ok, its fine to use if you want to.

What a load of poppycock. And if you want to get technical, Maksim is a slavic name and could just as easily be Ukrainian.

Max sounds just fine to me. Don’t go for unusual spellings. People will always mispell Maksim in the Uk.

I thought the lads mags were abolished years ago like Maxim and Loaded.

Maksim - I like it more now knowing your Slavic history, however at first look, it looked like you were trying to make a name look 'cool' with its own spelling.

I'm going for Maxim. By the time he is grown the magazine will be a thing of the past. I'm late 40's btw so saw the growth of Loaded, Maxim, even worse - Nuts. I thought they had all slowly died.

Maxim is lovely, one of my fave boys names -elegant, uncommon, yet still fairly well known. I agree Maximilian at 5 syllables could be a bit much, Maximus is a gladiator, Maxwell's a surname and Max more a diminutive - Maxim always seems just right to me Grin. If you live in the UK, I'd stick with spelling it this way as it's the most well known spelling (ala Du Maurier's "Rebecca").

The lads mag association is probably the reason it's not a more popular name - but at least it's not on high street shelves here anymore, and I don't think a lot of men/boys would bother with Maxim online these days.

It pairs well with most international girls names I think, so Rosa or Genevieve work fine.

Love Max but Maksim is Slavic so a bit weird to use if you’re not from one of those countries and people will probably think he’s Russian. Maxim is a soft porn lad’s mag but you could spell it Maxime which is the French way and I think that would go really nicely with Genevieve.

The people we are honouring (a family member) is from one of the countries that uses the name with both spellings.

The problem with Maxim is that people will automatically stress the first syllable whereas I'm guessing you want the stress on the second syllable? If that's the case, it's Maksim. Great name, by the way.
