Ambrose is great, not keen on Augustus.
Clementine is fine but there seem to be quite a lot of Clementines/Clementinas where I live, which I was a bit surprised by, as I would have expected it to be quite an uncommon name.

Love Ambrose Augustus William - fabulous name.

Love Clementine Goldie, but not Nell.

Nell always makes me hear 'death knell', or conjure up an image of a sturdy milkmaid.

Clementine Goldie Eleanor or Clementine Goldie Penelope would be nicer imo. Or Clementine Eleanor Goldie or Clementine Penelope Goldie...

I’m afraid Ambrose makes me think of rice pudding too! How about August nn Gus or William for a boy, and Eleanor nn Nell or Primrose for a girl?!

Why did you write the spoiler!!!! I was just about to read that book!!!!!

This. Ask @detectorist1 .

OP didn't say that she was pregnant. She might have been looking for names for a child not yet conceived.

I hope so!

Otherwise we have probably just insulted a chosen name!

Why has it suddenly popped up top of the feed?

ZOMBIE
this baby would be 1-2 years old now.

William is safe, Augustus is OK but a bit Roald Dahl, Ambrose is pretty bad.
Nell is cool, Clementine too satsuma. and Goldie too something.

The names are far too frilly and the combinations too different to each other.

Clementine too satsuma😂

I actually think its quite sweet op but I'd be inclined to give her a more ordinary name to go with it - something like Clementine Jane keeps the fireworks in check! I also quite like Clemency if its the Clem bit you like and it is a little less citrusy.

I don't like Nell with it really because the emphasised e and ll sounds are echoed in both Clem and Nell.

I love Helena and Nell is a lovely nn...?

Lou802 · 02/10/2025 20:54

Are these supposed to be 6 alternative first names or 2 first names with 4 middle names?

If they're all first names (as i hope) then definitely William and then either Clementine or Nell.

LivingTheDreamish · 02/10/2025 20:53

I love your girl name!

I'm also in the camp of wanting to love Ambrose but somehow can't get past the thought of tinned rice pudding.

Calliopespa · 02/10/2025 20:48

I'm not as opposed to Ambrose as some others but I think the combination really doesn't work.

I'm a fan of a good "distinctive" or "weighty" name tucked in there like Augustus, but I don't think you can string them together or it gets all too much - a bit like when little girls wear their frilly socks AND their sparkly dress AND their hair bows AND their glitter shoes.

Glitter shoes can look fabulous with a simple dress! And I think Ambrose and Augustus is just too much too muchness. Then William is kind of hanging about looking plain and awkward beside them. I prefer Augustus and Gus is a great nickname.

Clementine works better with the suggested names because Goldie, while unusual (I've never heard of it?) isn't grand or fancy. The Nell sounds a bit lost on the end maybe?

ETA But there are some nice names tucked in there op. Maybe just play round with the combinations - probably getting rid of some and thinking what sits well with what. It sounds a bit like a rag bag of every name you've ever liked!

Cocktailsandcheese · 02/10/2025 20:35

Ambrosia custard
Augustus Gloop
Goldie lookin chain

William is lovely 😊
Clementine is ok

DC555 · 02/10/2025 14:20

I love the name Nell and it’s my top choice for a girl (ignore comments about nicknames or rhyming 🙄) but I don’t think it works as a middle name, especially not at the end of a long list. It feels oddly like a full stop there.
Whereas I think Nell Clementine is lovely.

Buttercupsdaisiesdandelions · 20/06/2023 11:38

I think Ambrose works better as a middle name than a first name. I know a William Ambrose and think that's lovely.

Giselletheunicorn · 19/06/2023 22:42

Ambrose makes me think of rice pudding. Augustus is great though.

Clementine is lovely but doesn't go with Goldie and Nell IMO....

Soapyspuds · 19/06/2023 22:33

I doubt it

More likely to be nicknamed custard than Pancake.

SomethingNastyInTheGenePool · 19/06/2023 22:16

Goldie as in Lookin’ Chain??

CountTo10BeforeExploding · 19/06/2023 22:08

Ambrose makes me think of rice pudding and custard. Sorry.

Scentedrose · 19/06/2023 22:04

Soapyspuds · 17/06/2023 23:02

Ambrose is okay. But they will probably be nicknamed 'Custard'

I doubt it.

JanesBlond · 19/06/2023 22:03

Ambrose I think custard. Augustus is ugly too (Gloop). William is lovely.

Clementine Goldie sounds like a variety of citrus. Clementine itself is fine but I’d drop both the middle names.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 19/06/2023 22:01

Also there used to be a catalogue for older ladies called Ambrose Wilson.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 19/06/2023 22:00

Custard, rice or an orange 🍊? Lol.

Longdarkcloud · 18/06/2023 22:44

If you like Ambrose ( good name despite the jibes on here) what about Aubrey?
