I love them both :) Which do you prefer?

(wouldn’t want Annie to be a nn for a longer name)

I know a lot of primary school Amelies, prior to the past 10 years I only ever knew my sister - an Amelie born in the late 80s when no one had ever really heard of it in the UK and she always got mistaken for Emily. She has used Amy as a nickname since she was about 10. One of those names that sounds like it should be unusual but seems to be very common, around here at least.

I think Amelie is nice enough but I think it will become quite dated. Annie is lovely but I do prefer Anna.

@Rosiiee , in the UK it started to be used when the film of that name came out. in 2001.
Babies called Amelie in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)
Emily was incredibly popular already.

I think it might be a bit middle-aged in France.

Rosiiee · 13/02/2024 19:47

I know 2 18 yr old girls called Amelie- same grade/same school in Australia! I was so surprised because it’s not a common name outside of France I would’ve thought. Just to say it’s becoming a bit of an international name clearly!

Pottedpalm · 13/02/2024 19:41

Amélie is beautiful, as is Amelia.
I don’t like Annie, makes me think of Annie the musical. Anna is more classy.

ForAquaBee · 13/02/2024 14:35

Having Amélie with the accent makes you sound stuck up and pretentious. When I read your child’s name I don’t to feel condescended, please go with Annie.

Anne is gorgeous, smart and beautiful and skilled.
Think .. Princess Anne, Anne Hathaway, Anne Frank, Anne of Green Gables.

bingoringo4 · 13/02/2024 12:42

Amelie

AnaBNanna · 13/02/2024 12:42

I don't see Annie from Amelie... or is that a different name? I am an Anne. I use that. My grand daughter is Amelie, which I love. Or Am, Ammie. Not big on Amelia. Had an aunt, Mary Amelia. Knew her as Molly.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/02/2023 15:46

Not mad about either, although Annie is sweet as a nn. They are both a bit twee.

cravingtoblerone · 25/02/2023 12:21

Annie, a timeless classic

alotoftutus · 25/02/2023 09:14

My two favourite names both beautiful. If my baby was a girl she would have been one of these. Possibly Annie slightly more

SusieKin · 25/02/2023 09:11

Amelie sounds so much nicer. Annie sounds like an old lady name

DuchessOfSausage · 25/02/2023 09:02

I don't think Ann(e) is boring and old fashioned. I know some who go by Annie or Nancy, but they tend to be older. I think a young Annie or Nancy will have that name on their BC.

You might like Amelie, but I think it is too close to Emily, which is nicer but not a favourite, and it became popular after the film. It's one of those names that looks pretty and sounds nice in a French accent. I think Amelie is a bit middle-aged in France.

I don't like Amelia - it's too frilly and the name of a birth defect. Lots of parents must like it. Emilia is nice but it probably involves telling people that it's not Amelia.

Starchipenterprise · 25/02/2023 08:42

Anne is plain boring and old fashioned. I have an Amelie it is a beautiful name. Amelia is common, I dislike it and it's the name of a disease too.

Lion1618 · 25/02/2023 08:23

Annie

Hanneli · 24/02/2023 21:39

Amelie! It is a beautiful name.

Bert2e · 23/02/2023 18:58

Anna is far more sophisticated than either, hate Amelie, it's been over done and is dated.

Londonmama85 · 23/02/2023 18:54

Thanks everyone. Annie seems to be the more popular name on here :). I was worried it might be too ‘vanilla’

I don’t think Amélie is overused (think it was number 87 in the top 100) but I can see how it could be mistaken for Amelia as they do sound quite similar!

Amelie without the accent assuming you’re not in France. Not keen on Annie but I love Anna.

desperadodogface · 23/02/2023 18:18

I love Annie so much! Prefer Amelia to Amelie but if you do go Amelie, unless you live in France don't use the accent. It'll be annoying for her

ourflagmeansdeath · 23/02/2023 18:16

Amelie

SleepingisanArt · 23/02/2023 14:42

I know a couple of ladies called Amelie - they both get fed up with being called Amelia.....

Rellywobble · 23/02/2023 14:39

Annie 💯
