Do you like the name Romilly?

I'm stuck for a name for our little girl. I want something pretty but a bit unusual and I think I like the name Romilly but can't decide if it's a bit too uncommon. What do you think? I'm also not sure of a middle name but thinking it needs to be a one-syllable name so that it's not too much of a mouthful?

I love it. I've only ever met one, who's now a teenager and is known as Romilly or Roms. It's a strong but pretty name, like a cross between Rose and Emily, but less common than either of those.

Yes I do and I'm not a great fan of u unusual names . I think it's very adaptable . Milly is nice of course Roma and the full name so your allowing her to choose as she is older.

Sorry, but the first thing that came to mind for me was "Homily" as in the name of the mum in The Borrowers.

Put me right off

Also, based on this thread alone, she'll be one of dozens in her school.

I love it and it was on my list. Romilly Street in Soho was where DH proposed. Nickname was going to be Romy (like Romy Schneider).
Had two boys so never happened.

The Hitler/Mitford digression on this thread has to be one of the most hilariously paranoid over-analysis I have ever come across on the baby name board. And that's saying something.

It always makes me think of Romulus and Remus, but I suspect I'm in the minority with that!!

Hilary is not a place name. It's an ancient Greek and/or Roman word meaning 'cheerful'.

Shirley is a surname. Yes, it was oiginally derived fom a place name but that was not its usage at the time it became a popular name, in the 19th cent.

Slightly biased because we have an older daughter called Romilly and know a younger Romilly as well. It jumped out as an interesting name and suits our daughter really well - no issues with pronunciation or confusion with other names.

It helped that there is the political correspondent, Romilly Weeks, so it is maybe an unusual but established girls' name.

I love it, but have confirmation bias. Mine is 12 this week. She’s known as Rom, which we never planned for - we assumed she would be Romy.

She still likes it, as do we.

Hear it more and more. Normally would say 3 syllables is too frill but this seems like a fresh Emily type. Would be on the shortlist
