Doing this poll on behalf of a good friend who is due on Thursday. What do you narky old hags make of these names ?

Thalia / Talia (and comments on spelling?)
Bella
Roseanna / Rosanna (spelling?)
Lola
Mahalia
Xia (pronounced Zee-ah)

Will pass on bitchiness comments to friend asap :-)

(p.s. she is a real friend not a 'friend' - ie. I am not up the duff!)

I was at school with a Mahalia. thought it was very unusual then (25 yrs ago). she had a middle eastern look about her, although I can't remember her origins.

how about Thandi? my south african cousin is called this and I think it's lovely. (also Thandi Newton) pronounced 'tarndy', except the africaans pronunciation is waandi/ouandi, I think. a bit of useless knowledge!! tell your friend good luck!!

I know several Thalias here in Greece (pronounced with the 'th' as in 'think' and with the stress on the first syllable). It's quite a pretty name, and one I haven't heard much in the uk.

Bella - nice if it's a short form of something else

Roseanna - I want this as a middle name if mine turn's out to be a girl!

Thalia- difficult to know how to pronounce, the original Thalia (Greek muse of tragedy, I think) would be pronounced Thaleea with the stress on the 2nd syllable, but if short for Nathalia presumably different?

Bella- unfortunate CBeebs connotations atm, but that won't last; I'd say it's a possibility

Roseanna- I quite like this one

Lola- out of all of them, this is the one I'm not so keen

Mahalia and Xia- ok, I suppose, not much of a reaction really

-I love this name...when growing up I knew a very glamourous girl with that name, if spelled Thalia people might assume it's pronounced the usual TH way...so Talia might be safer.

Bella
-Tweenies spring to mind...and isn't Bella that bossy character...also, used to ride a Pony called Bella, lol...not my taste.

Roseanna / Rosanna (spelling?)
-hm...not to keen

Lola
-I know it's all fashionable, and it is kind of cute, I suppose...but not one of my favourites.

Mahalia

  • do like this one...there is a singer with that name, isn't there...

Xia (pronounced Zee-ah)

  • i think this is a lovely nickname (eg for Isabella) but i'm not kean on it in its own right

  • don't like this, it reminds me of Rosanne Barr

Lola

  • cute, but unless she is small and very funny i'm afraid it just won't work

Mahalia

  • sounds like a foreign greeting to me ...

Bella - pretty but a bit Tweenies
Roseanna / Rosanna - reminds me of Roseanne (TV) in a sarcastic and grumpy kind of way
Lola - no, because of that song and the film
Mahalia - hmm, sounds like it is trying to hard
Xia - yes, very nice, but the spelling will be difficult for people and may cause lifelong annoyance. Would certainly make her stand out in a crowd though.

What about all those poor Bellas that came before the Tweenies? . It reminds me of a woman I used to work with who called her daughter Cruz (she was Spanish and devoutly Catholic, and Cruz is a typically Spanish Catholic girl's name). Then Dosh & Pecs called their son Cruz about a month later. She wasn't a happy bunny.

Talia as a shortened version of Natalia is ok, but I don't like it on its own.

I like Bella but she's a Tweenie.

I like Rosanna.
Lola is pretty but there are loads about.
Not keen on the rest.
