Hephzibah

We have just been discussing girls names... even though we're convinced we are having a boy!

Think we have decided on Martha Edith, but we both really love the name Hephzibah... it's a hebrew name that means something like 'my delight is in her'. It would be shortened to Effie or Eppie, but we're not sure we're brave enough.

Your thoughts please.....

Euphemia good Scots name - also shortened to Phemie whioh I like.

Chopster · 24/01/2008 11:26

I like it, but it comes across rather masculine to me for some reason, when I saw the title I thought it was a boy's name!
I think it would be shortened to Hep too, which I think is rather sweet.

Piffle · 24/01/2008 11:01

Great but think of the child in reception learning to write her name...

DH loves Hepzibah. I have others I like more, but if you both like it go for it!

Yes, makes me think of Carrie's War too.

It's a bit pretentious if you ask me.

wardrobemistressakasugarfree · 24/01/2008 08:48

Hepzibah is what they nearly call the baby in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

I like it. More than Hannah which is what they actually call her.(not that I dislike Hannah)

flameboy · 24/01/2008 07:59

I'm having Hephzibah if my bump is another dd. I've wanted it since I was a little girl.

It is growing on me, in fact it is lovely.

But are you sure it is greek? I thought it was an old hebrew name? Meaning: "My love is with her'

SO do you have boys names, I think your dds have quite funky names?! so I guess that makes it harder! Remind me when you're due, are you August? How old will dd3 be then?

fortyplus · 24/01/2008 00:31

I went to school with a girl called Hepzibah. Is Hephzibah really a 'correct' spelling?

I think it would sound a bit affected if you yelled it

Ohhhh HEP - Ziii - BAHHHH! Come here darling!

Can you imagine the looks?

chopchopbusybusy · 24/01/2008 00:05

Hepzibah was also the name of the little girl in Silas Marner. Not sure about it myself. I do like Martha though.

fingerwoman · 24/01/2008 00:03

I am a Claire and I have to tediously spell my name out too. and my relatively common surname

so don't let that put you off

Martha Edith is lovely. Can't even pronounce Hepzibah. Think of her trying to spell it as she grows up, and having to (tediously) spell it out to everyone as an adult.

1dilemma · 23/01/2008 23:59

Family name, only come across it once or twice before, I have my eye on it just waiting to have the dd!! Do you know what you're having?
