What do you think of Calla for a girl?

@Tillygetsit , did you get that from Nameberry? Those sites are often dodgy.

The calla lily is a bit of a funeral flower.

CALLASMOM · 02/09/2025 11:40

I named my daughter Calla (born in 2018), I actually know of 2 others. It means “beauty” - nobody really struggles with it although I sometimes get asked if it’s one L or 2 🤷‍♀️ I can deal with that considering the other wild names out there. I love her name and she’s a beautiful girl! I get told be people all the time they love it, maybe they’re lying but I don’t care, at least she’s not one of 4 kids with the same name in her year 🤣

sageandroses · 16/04/2020 11:51

I agree with a PP who said it sounds like Carla in a Leeds accent

Whatishappening9876 · 16/04/2020 01:37

It's nice but I prefer Callie or Callia

I know 3, 4 of you count the one my sister knows who I know her mum vaguely one with siblings called heather, Fiona and Donald and I'm afraid I took their word for it that it's scottish so apologies if I'm spreading false information but Cala along with all the variations - Callisto, Kali, Callia. However you wish to spell it absolutely does mean beautiful or beautiful one (dc are of Greek heritage which is why I'd considered it both times) . I also live in a Cala home, it's alright! 😆

Viviennemary · 14/04/2020 12:06

Not keen. I thought of lillies too.

emmathedilemma · 14/04/2020 12:02

Cala Homes here too!
I've never heard of anyone in Scotland being called Calla.

NeverTrustASmilingCat · 14/04/2020 11:12

Reminds me of this

Sounds too much like Callous

midnightstar66 · 14/04/2020 09:35

Lovely. It's not unusual here in Scotland. My second name for both DD's was Kalia and I still wish I had a kalia - I remember my sister suggesting Calla as a scottish alternative

LittleCandle · 14/04/2020 08:56

The first thing I thought of, before reading which topic this is, was - don't buy a calla home, they are shit. So I would vote no.

Pearofwisdom · 14/04/2020 08:48

Calor gas

How about Callia?

Meltedwellie · 14/04/2020 00:19

Makes me think of a Spanish resort. It’s a no from me.

sadpapercourtesan · 14/04/2020 00:18

It's nice. It would be a nice shortening for Callista as well.

87Callista · 14/04/2020 00:15

Fornia

fyi

Tillygetsit · 13/04/2020 23:21

It IS a real name:

"The name Calla is a girl's name of Greek origin meaning "beautiful". Calla is a lily name that is much more distinctive and delicate than Lily. Rarely heard today, it did appear in the popularity lists in the last decades of the nineteenth century."

I like it.

ilikebigbuttsandicannotlie · 13/04/2020 22:29

Never heard of it. Caliope shortened to Callie is nice.

UnrulySalvia · 13/04/2020 22:25

It's nice (I also think of Calla lilies - used to have loads in my garden but pulled them up when we got a cat which was very sad as they were beautiful..)

BabbleBee · 13/04/2020 22:23

Never heard it as a name before, but I do like calla lillies! It has the potential to be one of those “how do you spell that” names though.

Enough4me · 13/04/2020 22:23

Never heard of it, but really like Callie.

Honeywort · 13/04/2020 22:22

It’s a lily to me, so fine as a floral type name.
