Cara or Kara?

Cara is the Irish spelling, meaning friend, Kára is Norse and means little wild one or curly one.

I like both, think Cara is more likely to be spelt right but love the Valkyrie link and meanings of Kára. Dh (who is Irish) prefers Kára.

I prefer Kara and would always think the name is spelt with a K. I know 1 Cara and 1 Kara

Quite easy to tell people “Kara with a K” . No ambiguity or difficulty there.

I’ve only ever met Kara’s so would assume that spelling over Cara.

Lovely name though, either way.

Genuinely one of the few names where I like both options. Slightly prefer Cara, but Kara is fine, though personally I would avoid using the accent.

OP - I don't think they are pronounced the same. The Norse Valkyrie Kara has an accent over the first 'a', which I think would make the name sound more like 'Kawra'. But I'm definitely not an expert, so I hope that Scandinavian Mumsnetters can come along and either confirm or deny this.

Go for the one you prefer, write them both down then you can get an idea as to which you prefer to write and the look of.

Go with the one you prefer. I don't necessarily think people will automatically get it wrong if it's spelt with a K. Either way people will ask. Until Cara Delevingne came along I would have assumed it was K.

Yes people will spell it with a C so it will save correction all the time. Lovely name congrats.

Cara. It will hardly ever be spelt correctly the other way and your DD will grow up fed up of explaining to people about it.
