Andrea?

I'm pregnant with my first child and for as long as I can remember I have loved the name Andi for a little girl. I really like Andrea as a full name and am not keen on the other names that could be shortened to Andi (Miranda, Cassandra)

My partner thinks Andrea is old and outdated but so are many other names that have come back around! I guess Andrea just isn't one of those quite yet.

What do people think of Andrea/Andi? Are there any other names that could be shortened to Andi?

Others in the shortlist are

Emma
Anna
Kate/Cate
Eleanor/Nellie
Bryony
Alexandra
Juliet
Violet
Robyn
Edina/Idina

Anna, Juliet, Kate are also outdated... for older people..

Have you not heard of Frozen?

Anna is very very popular for little girls.

And Juliet increasingly so

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 20/04/2025 21:51

it’s too early to revive Andrea, like Melanie and Amanda it needs another 10 or 15 years

Just go for Alexandra nn Andie as you like that too. Andie is sweet as a nn.

Do not just call her Andie, it’s generally a male name so she wouldn’t thank you

Emanwenym · 20/04/2025 21:20

Emma - love
Anna - like
Kate/Cate - like Kate but don't like Cate
Eleanor/Nellie - Eleanor is OK, Nell is great, don't like Nellie
Bryony - don't like
Alexandra - like
Juliet - like but don't like it said as Juliette
Violet - just ok
Robyn - don't like
Edina/Idina - Edina oh, Idina looks made up

StScholastica · 20/04/2025 20:01

From your list I'd pick Eleanor shortened to Nell, or Edina/Eddie/Dinah
I do like Andrea/Andi though.

We have an Andi so deliberately not reading the comments that are quite possibly hating the name but we just went with it as Andi. We didn't like any longer version. The only person who ever batted an eyelid at it was an elderly stranger in a shop who was making chit chat with me. Everyone else has commented on how much they love it.

BootballJoy · 19/04/2025 18:29

Really dislike the name Andrea, I think it might be that the drea bit makes me think of dreary. Andi is nicer on its own.

Emanwenym · 19/04/2025 18:06

Andrea is fine but not keen on Andi.
Alexandria is nice.

NotesOfBoredom · 19/04/2025 15:57

Anna, Juliet, Kate are also outdated... for older people..

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 01/12/2018 07:30

I like Andrea.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 23/11/2018 18:52

I have friends called Andrea and Alexandra (neither are Andi). I agree with pp who said that Andrea is a bit middle aged (my friend would kill me for saying that 😂); I don’t think it’s time yet for an Andrea revival. I like Alexandra.

TokenGinger · 23/11/2018 18:49

I used to work with a lady who was just called Andi. It was lovely.

villainousbroodmare · 23/11/2018 18:36

I really like Andrea (And RAY a) and know a very gorgeous one.

DramaAlpaca · 22/11/2018 19:04

I really dislike it that may be due to an assocation

It's a very 60s name. The rest of your list are much nicer, apart from Edina which is far too Ab Fab, dahling.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 22/11/2018 18:49

Nowt wrong with Andrea. I know a very nice Andrina, if that's another option?

SuperSuperSuper · 22/11/2018 16:37

Agree completely with ghostsandghoulies

ghostsandghoulies · 22/11/2018 16:29

I think that Andrea will be popular in 10+ years time when 60s names start to be more fashionable.

I personally prefer your other names with the exception of Edina/Idina and Bryony.

lebkuchenlover · 22/11/2018 16:25

Andrea is lovely

Shadow1234 · 22/11/2018 16:12

I hink its an ok name.
Love the names Bryony and Robyn from your list.

Nutbutter · 22/11/2018 15:43

Do you say it Andreeea or Andraya? Either way I think it’s great - not common but classic and Andi is really cute.

MeVoila · 22/11/2018 15:15

Not keen on Andrea- I think it's a bit my generation and I'm early fifties! ( strangely find it more acceptable as Italian boys' name...). From your list, I love Juliet- or Kate/ Cate or Eleanor. Beautiful, timeless, classic- but alas no connection to Andi...
Could you not just go the whole hog and name her Andi?

Theyprobablywill · 22/11/2018 15:11

I like the name, I wanted to call our cat Andrea, but dh made a fuss because 1) it wasn't a cat name 2) the cat is male.

Changedmynametoolikeyou · 22/11/2018 15:05

Andrina Ballerina ❤️

FlamingJuno · 22/11/2018 15:04

I'm 55 and Andrea is a name I associate with women of my age. It's too soon for a revival IMO Grin. Great on a boy though. Alexandra offers more possibilities.

NinjaGoSaysNo · 22/11/2018 14:54

I like Edina best from your list but think Andi is fine and met a 2yo one recently. Andi was her full name and i dont think it needs to be short for anything.
