The honest truth on this name

So I really like the name Romana and so does DH. I know my family will hate it though because I'm predictably weird with my choices for everything in life. I know it's not completely out there but it's more unique than most names, at least in Blighty. I think it has more following in Slovenia, Czech Republic and a few other countries.

How do you guys feel about it?

I know there are alternatives: Rowenna, Rowena, Rosalina, Ramona etc but I'm not taken. It has to be Romana.

Whatever you chose, it won't be "more unique." Something is either unique (there is only one of it in the whole world) or it isn't.

ZadesLittleMouse · 29/08/2026 13:41

I don't get the name association to pizza. There are names like Brie, Jack, Valentina, Clementine, Rogan, Josh, Olive, Rosemary, Sage, Pepper, Kale, Angus, Reuben, Baker, Cook etc etc. Romana sounds like a roman empress or a princess to me. I'd like it 🙋‍♀️

INeedaDietcoke · 26/08/2026 13:02

The original post is 9 years old...I wonder what OP named her baby.

Calliopespa · 24/08/2026 16:37

blacksheep2014 · 23/05/2017 18:43

I didn't get the pizza thing. What about Rowanna?

Rowanna? That sounds like someone vomiting.

Sorry another one who thinks pizza or Forum Romanum - or simply that you were meaning Ramona and got it wrong

Peanutlicious · 24/08/2026 07:21

I think.pizza, sorry. I taught a Romany once

Giraffehaver · 23/08/2026 22:52

I think the sound is lovely

WeddingDressguest · 21/08/2026 19:59

NotISaidTheWalrus · 23/05/2017 18:27

As in the 70's Time Lord?

That's the first thing I thought. Full name Romanadvoratrelundar - i guess the op wouldn't go for that though 😅

Firebird83 · 21/08/2026 17:14

I prefer Romina

GoodGraciousGeorgie · 21/08/2026 17:12

Oh I think it's lovely! Much nicer than the other similar names you and others have mentioned.

I'm unaware of the pizza, I haven't been to Pizza Express for years not even sure where my nearest one is...

I also don't know about the Doctor Who connection, I started watching it in the Christopher Eccleston era and stopped after David Tennant, I don't remember a Romana.

Saladinmyplate · 21/08/2026 14:30

My name is Romana and seeing how people are reacting to it is strange to me haha. I'm from Bangladesh and here it is not unusual rather a stylish name. I didn't know people abroad thought it was a bad name. I think it's about how a person carries themselves. The name gets attached to the person's personality.

icantgetnosleep5 · 30/05/2017 12:58

Oh god, no, sorry it's really awful! I can't even decide which sex it's for and whether it would be more hideous for a boy or girl!

MaisyPops · 29/05/2017 10:22

Ramona is nice.

Ramona is just odd to me.

glitterglitters · 29/05/2017 09:54

I have a Ramona Smile

Only issue I would have with Romana is it's a type of Pizza Express pizza base.

daisypond · 29/05/2017 09:52

I think it's fine. It's the feminine form of Roman, so I might assume you have a Rome or Italy connection. I don't think pizza at all.

Nooneno1 · 29/05/2017 00:29

I taught a Romana last year she was lovely and its a great name!

qumquat · 28/05/2017 20:39

I know a Romana in her 20s, she's very posh so that's what I associate with the name. It's not what I would choose but it's your baby and it suits my friend well.

almosttherenow · 24/05/2017 09:53

I had a friend at school called Romana, we all called her Ro...no one battered an eyelid to it being slightly unusual and she certainly never got teased about it. I also didn't meet her and think 'pizza'. I really can't understand people on here linking names to objects, seriously when do you ever meet someone and think 'oh you're like a pizza'!

Anyway, nice original name and go for it if you like it!

chainedtothedesk · 24/05/2017 09:52

Like it. Go for it. If your family dislike it, tough. They will get over it. I love the name Ramona too but I'd be afraid of her being called 'moaner'.

Ecureuil · 24/05/2017 09:35

I like it! No pizza association for me, but then I've never eaten at pizza express.

Joeybee · 24/05/2017 09:31

Not a fan, but think Ramona is fantastic. However I think Romana is useable. It's not too out there and I recon she could totally own her name and make it her own. I'd go with your gut instinct on this, try not to be put off by others opinions.

SomeOtherFuckers · 24/05/2017 03:36

Romana sounds masculine despite the a ending. Also has Romany or Roma connotations which some people might make assumptions ( not that they should or that it's a bad thing imo ), sounds like rhowanna spelt incorrectly ...

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 24/05/2017 02:23

Honestly? I think it's awful.

BunnyBunnyMooseMoose · 24/05/2017 02:22

I had a great-aunty Romana! My grandmother's sister.
She was unbelievably stylish, always bought the best presents and we kids all adored her, so I really love the name Romana.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/05/2017 02:19

I like Romana. It means Roman though (as in Pax Romana). Is anyone Roman? Or Italian?

SuperBeagle · 24/05/2017 02:13

She'll get called Ramona all the time.

And I much prefer Ramona.
