Tell me what name you would like for yourself. And maybe your partner. So I can hear some names that work beyond the baby years. Thank you.

My name is the same as that of a very famous wife of an assassinated president , so it dates me terribly and no one can spell it ( or often even its popular shortened version)

When I was about 13 I wanted so badly to change it to Vanessa ( am so glad now I didnt ) Im used to my name now , but perhaps I had to , I might go for Anna (or Venetia)

But I had a friend back in the 70s who called her daughter Sol .. isn't that just great?

I don't like my name. It's a very common run of the mill 1980s name but what I really don't like is that it's not very 'soft' or feminine and I don't feel it suits me at all. I would have preferred Caroline (Carrie), Lucy or Emily which were all on my parents shortlist.

Thanks all. My daughter's name has been mentioned positively a few times. Today I think I would like to be a Megan. My dp would be Ben. Sensible, strong names imo.

I've got the dullest of names. That's why my handle on here isn't. I'm firmly of the view that you shouldn't CONSIDER a name that hasn't been in constant use for 500 years. Seriously. So many people on here saying they wish they had classic names. I'd choose Phoebe, Cecily or Matilda.

I like my name I wouldn't want anything else. But I enjoyed it because I wasn't one of 10 in my school, in fact I think I was the only one all throughout my education until I got to uni.

What's important is that you go with your taste, not with what you think you should pick. I was tempted to go for a more run on the mill name with my DD because I was anxious of the responses to the name I really loved, in the end I went with the one my dp and I wanted the most and I'm so glad we did!

I like my name Amy. When I was younger I always thought that I'd want a more exotic name as I found the way I say it (broad northern accent) made it either sound boring or made me look thick.

I always had quite a fondness to the unisex names - toni, Andi etc

Sabine but apart from a handful of royal or biblical names, no names are in constant use for hundreds of years. Almost everything goes round on a constant cycle of fashion. Cecily Phoebe and Matilda would have been deeply unfashionable when I was a child. They've only really become commonly used again since the 1990's.

A very, very small list of names actually defy fashion and remain truly timeless. Things like Victoria, James, John, Emma, Anna, Matthew, Rachel, Elizabeth etc (so as I said either royal or biblical names) but it's a pretty small and dull list.

TippyTappyLappyToppy Well I wouldn't on principle pay the smallest attention to fashion in names. That's why I said constant use. Awful to be able to date someone to a decade by their name.

When I was young and we'd play house. We always used to change our names. I was always Faye. I still like it, but. Even if God Blessed me with 10 more dds. I wouldn't use it.

As a child I wanted to be Matilda or Sophie because of the Roald Dahl heroines. I'd still like either of them. My parents nearly called me Melanie or Melissa which would age me horribly so I dodged a bullet there!

I love my first name (Louise) but hate hate hate my middle name (Sarah) - I've always been baffled the love that Sarah gets on MN as I just don't see it. It's all so subjective isn't it!

Married to a Robin who was named after the original Poldark actor.

It's unusual that you are Louise Sarah. Mostly it is the other way around!

I think the danger with a very popular name is that you almost have to retrain yourself to hear the beauty in your name that led to your parents choosing it in the first place. I feel like that about mine - objectively I do like it but for a long time I couldn't hear the sound of it, only the frequency with which I heard it.
