That's it really, just after general consenses on the name Nelly/Nellie thinking Nelle quite nice as nn?!

Why the name Nelly is normal in the United States and is considered a beautiful modern name with many celebrities. The United Kingdom is still living in the Middle Ages xD

Thanks for your input though this threads is 8 years old

Ellen is nicer, I do agree with mrsschu, but they are very different names! So, if you love Nellie/Nelly - go for it!!!

waitressinacocktailbar · 18/02/2016 17:50

Nell is a Perrrrfect name Grin

Duckdeamon · 18/02/2016 17:44

OK as a nickname/shortening, but not alone as a name for DD especially if she becomes overweight Sad

mrsschu · 18/02/2016 17:42

Nelly is dreadful, it sounds ugly and ungainly IMO. Nell is passable as a nn for Ellen. Although Ellen is such a beautiful name that Nell as a nn would ruin it for me.

KatieT12 · 18/02/2016 16:14

I like it!

I think I prefer the Nellie spelling Smile

wonderpants · 18/02/2016 08:08

I knew a male Nelly too.
I think his surname was Nelson though!

I love names like it, Ellie, Molly but Nelly the Elephant is too well known!

NorksAreMessy · 18/02/2016 08:03

In fact my pal (possibly shared with math) was also called Nelleke, which I think is even cuter

nellyflora · 18/02/2016 07:52

I'm a nelly/Nell short for Helen. Seriously give the child a long name also for options. I do not use Nell or nelly in any professional way just family and friends.

Nelly the elephant packed her trunk - had this sung at me a lot over the years when ever my nick name was found out!

Qwebec · 18/02/2016 05:13

The only Nelly i know is the singer of

"It's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes" [music]

but he is rather forgotten now

mathanxiety · 18/02/2016 03:18

I love it. Very Dutch.
I know someone whose given name is Petronella, nn Nellie.

Nell makes me think of 'death knell'.

Shanster · 18/02/2016 01:58

Don't do it! My name is Eleanor and all through school I was called 'smelly nelly' and regularly heard the 'Nelly the Elephant' song.

GColdtimer · 18/02/2016 00:31

My dd is Polly. Some people like whereyouleftit told me everyone would sing Miss Polly had a dolly or Polly put the kettle on to her all the time. It's never happened.

Live Nell/Nellie - would probably name her Helen or Eleanor though to give her a choice.

MrsMoggy · 17/02/2016 23:58

My friend is Narelle, she's nicknamed Nell

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 17/02/2016 23:46

My goddaughter is a Nellie. As she gets older it's starting to become Nell more and more.

Nellie is sweet for a little girl, Nell is lovely for a teen and adult woman IMO.

Murphyslaw21 · 17/02/2016 21:53

To be honest my friend at school was called Nellie then one day in assembly we were told she was now to be called Kelly. She had been given nick name smelly Nellie.

My other friend called her little girl Nellie and she is 7. She is also nick named Nellie Nellie. My friend is so upset. And thinking of changing it to ellenor . Obviously unrelated friends.

EmpressOfTheVulvaCupcakes · 17/02/2016 21:49

Agree, sorry - Nell is great as a nickname for Helena, Eleanor, Fenella etc but Nelly / Nellie definitely doesn't work as a name in its own right.

ClashCityRocker · 17/02/2016 21:49

Saying that I have grand memories of a Nelly (male) taking me to my first punk gig.

I'm not sure why he was called nelly though. I think his real name was Steve.

ClashCityRocker · 17/02/2016 21:47

Nellie the elephant here too.

Although I think Nellie or Nell works as a nickname not as a given name.

CoffeeCoffeeAndLotsOfIt · 17/02/2016 21:46

Thought of the nelly the elephant song just reading the title.

Call her Nelly if you like, but I'd name her something else (helen / Ellen)

Artandco · 17/02/2016 21:42

I love Nell

I have never heard of a song nor elephant song regarding Nellie so I doubt it's that of an issue.

VinceNoirLovesHowardMoon · 17/02/2016 21:41

Nelly as a full name - no way. As a nickname it's ok, not great.

villainousbroodmare · 17/02/2016 21:40

IMO you have it the wrong way around. I'd have Nelle (or Ellen or Helen or Fenella or Elena or Eleanor or any of those elegant proper names) as the name, and Nelly/ Nellie for a nickname. Otherwise... not on your nelly!

cornishglos · 17/02/2016 20:11

I love it.
