Dickon - yes really!!

Today at work I came across a 30 something guy called Dickon. Who would do that to their child??!!

Hid surname didn't exactly help either, though not sure any would?

(Having looked it up, apparently Dickon is Old English for Richard.)

Whatever his surname is, it can't possibly be as baamd a name combo as Dickon Stainer, current president of Decca Records. But clearly it's not done him any harm!

The thing is, you don't pronounce Dickon the same as Dick On. It sounds more like Dicken. Unless you have a surname like Fire, I doubt if most people over the age of 12 would even notice the name included the word dick.

I like it.

I've come across a Dickon before. I also used to know a Panton, which is equally as bad.

I think if you are very posh (as they both were) you can probably just about get away with it.

The Dickon I knew was studying in Oxford, but was from Somerset, Alis.

I knew one at university, too. He was a brilliantly clever scientist who was a bit of a mad lad outside the lab. It's not that controversial a name, surely? For hundreds of years it was the ordinary nickname for Richard, before that contracted further to Dick. Still plenty of older men around with that name. Are people really as juvenile as they seem on here? Because I'm fairly certain that the predictors of playground hell are saying more about themselves than the presumed opinions of children...

TBH, I don't remember the Dickon at school being teased about his name. We were too busy laughing at our teachers Mr Gay, Miss Venus and Mr Fallas (whose name was Richard William). ShockHmmBlushSmile

The connotations do worry me though, so never really had it on my lists when I was pg. I'm pretty sure DH would have vetoed it too. Bah.

I know a 20 something with Diccon as a middle name. I was told it was old English for Richard.

I think its a nice name, have only ever heard of it through the secret garden.
I agree there are many other names that cause some folk to attach genital connotations
