onemore haha brilliant! Someone told me once that two middle names was just over the top, people are so judgemental when it comes to names! Do you know you're having a boy? What were your girl names? (Just out of interest) DH and I decided if ours turns out to be boy twins we'd have magnus and Rex!

I have a Magnus - never been shortened though he was referred to as 'madness' occasionally (which is appropriate...) It is still my favourite boy's name ever.

My Rex is too young to have an opinion although this is the first I've heard a negative comment about it! In real life everyone loves it. We wanted a very strong name with connotations of power and/ or leadership (as with the other dcs' names).

Like I said, Magnus was also on my list!

As someone said upthread Rex is marmite, on here at least.

I really like it and would use it were it not for the fact it sounds rubbish with my dp's surname and even worse with mine Sad

The first time I discovered Mumsnet (long before I started lurking never mind joined) was a thread about a woman wanting to call her son Rex. I think she did in end too.

Oh please please please call him Thomas Rex or similar. Then you can shorten it to T-Rex!

My children, aged 6 and nearly 8, have been campaigning for Rex for their soon-to-arrive new sibling. So it gets the under 10 voteSmile Smile

Is Rex popular?? Can't imaging anyone would have the bottle to name their child it after being on here Wink Trying to keep a count - think Rex has more lovers so far but also more haters - definitely marmite!

I was telling my DD about this thread today and she said her friend has Rex for her middle name, I didn't know what to make of that.

Ugh, re. People commenting on Rex being a dog's name - my little boy is called Felix so you can imagine what the majority of comments I get are along the lines of...

I like Felix too. Most of the boys names I like have an X in there somewhere!

Felix with my dp's surname (as I said upthread Rex doesn't work with mine or his) sounds great Smile

I have a Rex - have probably had mixed reactions but lots of people have said they think it's cool (plus he is now 3 and thinks it's great that he can get can you story pants with Rex written on them....)

Magnus - please use it for me!

If we had had a DS2 it would have been Magnus, I am a little upset I won't get to use it and shocked at the negative comments. I don't think it is too out their but I am Scottish with vague Orkney connections were it is a very popular name.

I can't thank you all enough for taking the time to comment, the positives, the negatives and the spiteful Wink I don't think I've ever been more torn! At the moment, I'm thinking of just calling him John to save him all this negativity Wink Magnus seems the safer choice in that respect but if I had to pick with no regard to anything or anyone, then maybe I would opt for Rex. As unfair as it is, I feel I have to consider how the name is going to be perceived as people can be judgemental and cruel. Better be safe than sorry as they say? ( not that Magnus is getting a super time on mn!)

Can you not choose Rex? My gorgeous nearly 10 year old nephew is a fabulous Rex, I love the name but I'd rather it didn't get too popular.

Having said that they live in Tokyo at the mo, so go ahead!

Onefortheteam, what is it about Magnus that you like? I'm just wondering because if you think that he'd be the only one in his class beware because he might not be! Would that be important to you? It seems to be gaining in popularity. I know 3 Magnuses under 3.

You have to go for what YOU want though. You'll know when he's born if he looks like a Magnus or a Rex!
