I think it's awful of people to say it's an alsations name, I would have said spaniel.

Try again - both are lovely OP. Ignore the posters who are making the (frankly, boring) comments about either being a pet name. I've heard it all before with both of my DCs names. Rude. We had both Magnus and Rex on our list though chose something completely different in the end!

Don't pick Magnus unless you're Icelandic, or some other Scandinavian nationality. Rex is OK though.

There was a Magnus in the year below me at school. No Scandi in his backround as far as I know. No issues with just being a Scottish Magnus.

I know 2 babies called Magnus. None called Rex but I did teach a Rex About 15yrs ago and I always thought it was a good strong name but couldn't imagine him as a grown up...no idea why, still can't.
My vote is Magnus but like both!

I love both but Rex edges it for me.

Dogs these days are more likely to be called Max or Charlie.

I like both but if I HAD to pick I'd chose Magnus. I also like Manus.

I have never met or heard of a dog being called Rex in my lifetime.

Most common dog names I've heard are Toby/Barney and Milly/Poppy.

Are they now not people names?
