Magnus or Rex?

Meant to add, the reasons we love it Onefortheteam, are:

It is a strong name
It has a nice meaning
It is short and succinct
It is masculine
There aren't too many of them
It is easy to spell
It is undeniably cool (or so every man under the age of 30 tells me)

Also, just to ease the worries of the 'pet name' brigade, my younger brother is called Felix. He is currently 16, 6'2", a county rugby and cricket player and has never once been bullied for his name.

I have a 21 month old Rex and we love it. I have only had one outwardly negative comment, one woman made the 'it's a dog's name, poor child' remark but then her son was called Tyson, after the boxer, so we don't really have the same taste and I think I would rather have a 'dog name' than be named after an ear-biting convicted rapist!

Everyone else is either massively positive or is too polite to say anything. Most people comment on how nice it is though.

I don't think many names can be 'cruel' to be honest with you. Personally I feel sorry for those children always called Emily C. or Emily K. because there are lots of them in the class. There is nothing wrong with the more popular names (indeed, I really like Emily) but I prefer names to be a bit more original.

Onefortheteam,It's still very much on my shortlist. I'm due in October with my first ds and it's a name I'm very close to choosing, I just want to meet him and see what he looks like before we name him properly though.

Also Fern Cotton has a son called Rex which may be a sign of the growing popularity.

Hi OP, I adore the name Rex and really want to call our ds the name when he's born. I've heard the dog name comments but tbf it was from my DM and she did used to have a dog called Rex when she was young. It doesn't change my opinion though, it's a great name.

It helps that I know someone called Rex in his 60's, he's a hard worker, funny and has a cool haircut.

My vote is for Rex. It's the name for a dinosaur, not a dog!
Nothing wrong with Magnus either.

Magnus is a good, strong, Scottish name.

The first thing I thought of with 'Rex' was "it's a dog's name."

The thing to remember though is that once people get to know and love your Rex (if you go for that), they will forget that it is a dog's name and it will just be his name.

Magnus is wonderful. Rex reminds me rather of an old film star in a smoking jacket and with a pipe, so Magnus wins all round for me unless old silver screen film stars are really your thing Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste does your Rex get any negative comments?

YouHaveBeenOutbid I'm not overly concerned about it gaining popularity as long as it's not overly used to the point of becoming boring. Most importantly, I want a strong name with a bit of impact.

Onefortheteam, what is it about Magnus that you like? I'm just wondering because if you think that he'd be the only one in his class beware because he might not be! Would that be important to you? It seems to be gaining in popularity. I know 3 Magnuses under 3.

You have to go for what YOU want though. You'll know when he's born if he looks like a Magnus or a Rex!

Can you not choose Rex? My gorgeous nearly 10 year old nephew is a fabulous Rex, I love the name but I'd rather it didn't get too popular.

Having said that they live in Tokyo at the mo, so go ahead!

I can't thank you all enough for taking the time to comment, the positives, the negatives and the spiteful Wink I don't think I've ever been more torn! At the moment, I'm thinking of just calling him John to save him all this negativity Wink Magnus seems the safer choice in that respect but if I had to pick with no regard to anything or anyone, then maybe I would opt for Rex. As unfair as it is, I feel I have to consider how the name is going to be perceived as people can be judgemental and cruel. Better be safe than sorry as they say? ( not that Magnus is getting a super time on mn!)

Magnus - please use it for me!

If we had had a DS2 it would have been Magnus, I am a little upset I won't get to use it and shocked at the negative comments. I don't think it is too out their but I am Scottish with vague Orkney connections were it is a very popular name.

I have a Rex - have probably had mixed reactions but lots of people have said they think it's cool (plus he is now 3 and thinks it's great that he can get can you story pants with Rex written on them....)

Felix with my dp's surname (as I said upthread Rex doesn't work with mine or his) sounds great Smile
