lol... only have one sister on my side... thank god! Love her but She is a handful. Still trying to forgive her for ruining our wedding..DH has banned her from the house!

Well i have a sister belinda and dh has a belinda also.. we refer to them as the good belinda and the bad one and depending on what they have been up to we know which one we are referring to!

I suggest no one name their dd belinda... they tend to have some major issues!
We also live in a block of villas and dh sisters live about twenty paces in the same block!

We all have the same surname obviously.. so that is confusing too!

I chose Caitlin (dd1's name, though I could equally have chosen dd2's name), and Finnian (I would have loved to have called ds Finnian but dh is not that keen).

Finnian definitely wouldn't pass the bacon aisle test!

Lola and Matthew for me. Always loved the name Lola, and not just because of Charlie and Lola which I expect may make the name more common-place. Do you think it would be strange to call your son the same as your brother?

I agree about the spelling on names. Know someone who has spelled jacob jaykeb and he is very odd! They might as well say 'i want some attention please'.

Still like cooper and Olivia. Also like regan, amber, paige and georgia. Like Bella too but have 2 sisters named belinda and they like to call themselves belle.

boys ones are logan blake and connor, but cant name connor cause sister in laws partners son is named that.

Oh, yes definitely. DS's names are anglicised versions of Greek names (although I think now, we should have stuck with the original of DS2s) There are loads of names I like more, but it has to work as a whole name, not just 'a name' I happened to like, if that makes any sense.

There are a few names put down on MN where I think, well hang on, I know non-chavvy (I hate that word) people who used that name because it's a traditional family one. Shakira's one I've picked up on, that gets lumped together with Britney/Chardonney etc. I suppose any name you're not used seems a bit weird to start with

Dh is quite adamant he isn't Greek (iykwim), so I always end up not quite knowing what to say! Just saying Cypriot doesn't always work. Xavier and Eliana are nice btw, my niece is called Liana

I know what you mean Beccy1974. I have vetoed sooooo many names that DP liked because I knew someone of that name and didn't get on with them.
So we picked fairly 'uncommon' names (in this country anyway) that we both liked.

brian is just an example, not one i'm thinking of although my dad is called brian and therefore i don't dislike it. i meant to say we'd all be called 'brian or something' if we had no choice, if it didnt come down to personal taste and was something imposed or just without choice or feeling

DP is Cypriot Greek also.. but we just say Greek! lol

we'd all be called Brian or something if we all liked the same names surely

my dh tries to reject a lot of names just on the grounds that someone famous shares the name. unless he is fan of their films or something

whilst i love the fact that he is young at heart, i like to think he'll come round and basically let me have the names i want

personally i just get a hunch about names and there are some which some people might think chav or something and others which might be considered from another social class or whatever .. i don't care, i just like the names.

i wouldn't choose certain names for my kids but who's to say that in five years those names might be trendy or something and every kid would love to be called xxx

at the end of the day you can't guarantee that an infamous dictator / serial killer won't come along called candy or something equally innoculous and sweet, rendering your sweet little girls name forever linked with something grizzly.

I vote go with what you like

I chose Lily and Nathan.

I've always loved Nathan but it's too English to go with our 'foreign' surname (also Greek, but Cypriot in our case)

I've grown increasingly fond of Lily since someone started using it as a nickname for DD. I was tempted to go with my second favourite but I don't know how to spell it properly DH veto'd it with DD for being 'too Greek'!

It was wabbit who mentioned placing in society. (nailpolish just sniggered I think )And I don't disagree, although that wasnt my intention, it can be the way things are viewed.

Hmm, I'm inclined to agree with Nailpolish; our taste in names is partly to do with 'placing' our children in society, which is partly why everyone gets so het up about it (!). There's a fairly entertaining chapter in Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point about this, although he's talking about 'upwardly mobile' vs 'black' names in the US. And, before I get jumped on, he's not intimating that one is better than the other, just commenting on both...

But what gets my goat is names that aren't spelt right. I know someone who's given her daughter a perfectly normal girl's name - but then put an extra 'e' in it. I wouldn't mind, but she complains that it keeps getting spelt wrong...

People down that bacon aisle might stop and stare at all sorts of things. I'm not going to waste any time worrying about what they think. I can only be myself because that's all I'm good at. I can't be bothered second guessing other peoples prejudice.
