Is this name too poncey for a boy?

Well I don't think so - but I have had it said to me (whatever it means). Let me know what you think. I don't want to saddle my boy with an crap awful name. But I really like it.

Julian??? Anyone?

It's a bit Enid Blyton but that's no bad thing.

For poncy you need the Jolyon variant according to MN.

otchayaniye · 18/04/2011 18:22

I considered Julian. Along with Lester and Francis.

I like it, it is a little old fashioned, but not twee, venerable, a bit overtly middle class, but nothing de trop.

Plus I know several very nice Julians.

But I'm having a girl

MsChanandlerBong · 18/04/2011 18:23

I'm not keen and find it a bit 'poncey' as you suggest - but honestly this is just my opinion and probably says more about me than the name!!

sancerrre · 18/04/2011 18:25

I really like it too but DH vetoed it on grounds of ponciness.

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 18/04/2011 18:26

I like it and don't think it's poncey. I had a huge crush on Julian from the FF as a child!

Cattleprod · 18/04/2011 18:26

It's a little bit poncey, but 'camp' would be my first opinion on the name. It's a name, like Gabriel, Beau etc, that is just a bit too feminine for my taste.

All the Julian's I've met have been very middle class.

reddaisy · 18/04/2011 18:27

I like it.

otchayaniye · 18/04/2011 18:30

Julius leans towards the grandiose, but Julian is pretty normal (but then I know a good few Julians/Tristans/Quentins etc)

LetThereBeRock · 18/04/2011 18:34

Julian is a lovely name.

oohlaalaa · 18/04/2011 18:36

It is a nice name, but I think it is a bit girly (too close to Julia, Julianna, Julianne).

Love the name Tristan though.

QueenofDreams · 18/04/2011 18:38

I like it. Step-FIL's ds is called Julian. Step-FIL is a totally non-poncy Jamaican!

needmyrootsdone · 18/04/2011 18:42

very 70s...all Julian's I know are late 30s.

A bit wet

Vajazzle83 · 18/04/2011 18:49

Im not keen tbh - soz

cece · 18/04/2011 18:52

I like it but DH vetoed it for being 'gay' whatever that means Hmm

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 18/04/2011 18:55

I like it. I've known several Julians and none of them have been in the least bit poncey. It's a classy name.

ragged · 18/04/2011 19:00

A bit wet, but if that's the worst I can say about it, not bad at all compared to many other names you could choose.

Francagoestohollywood · 18/04/2011 19:01

I actually really like it. But I am not English, therefore I don't get all the "nuances" a name can have!

zozzle · 18/04/2011 19:58

Its ok - not too poncey at all. Pretty normal/middle class to my ears.

wook · 18/04/2011 20:02

Jules is v v nice shortened version. Julian is a bit mean to some other children in one of the Famous Five books if you ask me....

Hatterbox · 18/04/2011 20:11

I think it's lovely, a strong and distinguished name.

Janoschi · 18/04/2011 20:56

Julian in FF wasn't so bad (and better than his brother Dick - now that's an unfortunate name). I like Julian actually - a little boy I know in Germany is called Julian, though pronounced differently.

On the subject of bad names in children's literature, wasn't one of the Swallows & Amazon kids called Titty? And I THINK she had a brother called Roger.... ah, nostalgia for more innocent times..... Grin

tammytoby · 18/04/2011 21:00

I think Julian is really lovely - classic and distinguished.

AuraofDora · 18/04/2011 21:06

Julian Cope
Julian Opie
Julian Drews ..just joking!
