Is this name too poncey for a boy?

Well I don't think so - but I have had it said to me (whatever it means). Let me know what you think. I don't want to saddle my boy with an crap awful name. But I really like it.

Julian??? Anyone?

You'll need to get a Labrador too!

MollieO · 20/04/2011 08:51

And of course ensure that he develops a taste for lashings of Ginger beer.

MollieO · 20/04/2011 08:59

Just seen AbFab's post and now understands why she knows loads of Williams and Lucys. Grin

I used to live near a Julien as a child.
When he started school he was teased mercilessly by the other kids calling him Julie. This was at 5!
In the end his parents had to start using his middle name as it was such a problem. This was in a working class area tho. So I would never use it as it shortens to Julie too easily.

evamummy · 20/04/2011 10:51

But how many Julies are there around these days, hardly none, so kids won't even think of it as a girls name. Anyway I doubt Julian would be shortened at all, and if so Jules is much cooler.

Lots of names are teaseworthy amongs 5 years old - Willy (William), Bendy dick (Benedict), etc.

littlebillie · 20/04/2011 22:35

I know a baby Julian, very cute.

muminthemiddle · 21/04/2011 15:37

Don't know any small Juliens.
Don't think he would get called julie as this is an older name as another poster said.
Quite middle class sounding to me.

rachel234 · 21/04/2011 15:42

Can't see what is teaseworthy about Julian? Other more common names are much more teaseworthy amongst silly schoolboys. I like it.

Greenwing · 21/04/2011 19:09

I think a slight problem here might be that you are getting a lot of positive feedback - but mainly from women/mums.
If you were to ask as many men and school children I think the opinionometer might swing very heavily to the negative - not so much 'poncey' as very, very wet. Not to mention the only Julian most people knows is Julian Clary.

'Opinionometer'? Did I just invent a word?

tammytoby · 21/04/2011 19:11

Julian Clary Hmm who is he?

My brother in law is a Julian and seems very happy with his name.

peeriebear · 21/04/2011 19:12

It's DH's dad's name, he is 6'7'' with hands like snow shovels. It is DH's middle name too. I like it. :)

CountHotCrossBapula · 21/04/2011 19:22

I love it. DH vetoed it, though Angry

flyingspaghettimonster · 23/04/2011 02:59

I loved it - was on our shortlist. I like the Enid Blyton character - he was gorgeous and dark and broody and mischievous...

Thissideofchannel · 23/04/2011 11:36

Lovely name.

jobrien1980 · 24/04/2011 12:55

It sounds very upper class and a bit camp to me (sorry!), but I'm Irish and have never even met a Julian IRL. They might have a hard time in the playground depending on what kind of school they go to. If you're worried you could either give it as a middle name or use it as a first name while giving them a very 'safe' middle name they could switch to in later life if they wanted.

evamummy · 24/04/2011 15:38

"They might have a hard time in the playground"

What exactly would schoolchildren find teaseworthy about Julian? Lots of more common names have much more tease potential imo e.g. William - Willy or Benedict (bendy dick) etc. I honestly fail to see what is teasable about Julian (and no, I don't have one Smile) but I think we should encourage name diversity, not limit ourselves to Tom, Ella or Jack...

FanjoForTheMusic · 24/04/2011 18:59

A bit wet sounding for me too. But Jules is ace.

mathanxiety · 24/04/2011 19:15

I like it but prefer Julius.

evamummy · 24/04/2011 20:33

What does 'wet' sounding mean? Gay, upper class, chav or what?

used2bthin · 24/04/2011 21:40

My brother is a Julian and not at all posh, he has worked as a chimney sweep and is a beer drinking motor bike riding type of man. But he hated his name as a kid in a very rough school and found it really embarassing. He likes it now though as it is unusual.

RainbowPatooties · 24/04/2011 21:42

love it

FanjoForTheMusic · 25/04/2011 06:49

For me 'wet' means a bit effeminate and not very dynamic. Same sort of thing as Laurence. But not in the same league as Maurice, Hilary or Francis. Grin

As I said, love Jules though.

evamummy · 25/04/2011 10:12

Thanks for clafiying what 'wet' means to you Fanjo. Seems to be a very subjective description because I can see a person being 'effeminate' but a name Hmm? I guess it depends on how many people with a certain name you've encountered who happened to be 'effeminate'?

I agree about Laurence because it is the female version of Laurent (and I know a lovely French lady called this) but can't see Francis or Maurice being feminine..?

FanjoForTheMusic · 25/04/2011 10:18

You're right, it's totally subjective, and I'm probably displaying awful double standards or prejudices of some kind. Blush Perhaps those names feel a bit Brideshead Revisited? (or Maurice?Grin)

MayBankHoliday · 27/04/2011 00:43

I like it.
