Is this name too poncey for a boy?

Well I don't think so - but I have had it said to me (whatever it means). Let me know what you think. I don't want to saddle my boy with an crap awful name. But I really like it.

Definitely more camp than poncey.

DP's work colleague recently had a son and named him Julian - just doesn't sound right. On the other hand, I quite like Julius.

I don't like it, and I especially don't like the shortened Jude (na nah nah na-na-na nah hey Jude, yuk), even worse Jude I can't commit to anyone because I love myself too much Law

You're right, it's totally subjective, and I'm probably displaying awful double standards or prejudices of some kind. Perhaps those names feel a bit Brideshead Revisited? (or Maurice?)

Thanks for clafiying what 'wet' means to you Fanjo. Seems to be a very subjective description because I can see a person being 'effeminate' but a name ? I guess it depends on how many people with a certain name you've encountered who happened to be 'effeminate'?

I agree about Laurence because it is the female version of Laurent (and I know a lovely French lady called this) but can't see Francis or Maurice being feminine..?

For me 'wet' means a bit effeminate and not very dynamic. Same sort of thing as Laurence. But not in the same league as Maurice, Hilary or Francis.

As I said, love Jules though.

My brother is a Julian and not at all posh, he has worked as a chimney sweep and is a beer drinking motor bike riding type of man. But he hated his name as a kid in a very rough school and found it really embarassing. He likes it now though as it is unusual.

What exactly would schoolchildren find teaseworthy about Julian? Lots of more common names have much more tease potential imo e.g. William - Willy or Benedict (bendy dick) etc. I honestly fail to see what is teasable about Julian (and no, I don't have one ) but I think we should encourage name diversity, not limit ourselves to Tom, Ella or Jack...

It sounds very upper class and a bit camp to me (sorry!), but I'm Irish and have never even met a Julian IRL. They might have a hard time in the playground depending on what kind of school they go to. If you're worried you could either give it as a middle name or use it as a first name while giving them a very 'safe' middle name they could switch to in later life if they wanted.

It's DH's dad's name, he is 6'7'' with hands like snow shovels. It is DH's middle name too. I like it. :)

I think a slight problem here might be that you are getting a lot of positive feedback - but mainly from women/mums.
If you were to ask as many men and school children I think the opinionometer might swing very heavily to the negative - not so much 'poncey' as very, very wet. Not to mention the only Julian most people knows is Julian Clary.

Can't see what is teaseworthy about Julian? Other more common names are much more teaseworthy amongst silly schoolboys. I like it.

Don't know any small Juliens.
Don't think he would get called julie as this is an older name as another poster said.
Quite middle class sounding to me.
