Girl's name, meaning the sweet-smelling daffodil-like plant and associated with the colour yellow.

I'm always surprised that with all the Amelias and Amelies and Millies that Camelia hasn't been used widely as a girl's name.

Makes me think of the Dame aux Camelias.

Rhododendron not so much ... but then again people use Rhonda so I guess why not.

I think it's ok OP. Better than Daffodil! For some reason some flowers work brilliantly (Violet, Rose, Iris, Marigold, Daisy), and others (Daffodil, Hydrangea, Elderflower, Alium) just really don't work. I'd put Jonquil somewhere in the middle - with Hyacinth. And actually I think Daphne is an ugly name.

I love it. Jonquille is French for daffodil. You might also like Jacquetta.

My daughter has a very lovely and sweet friend called Jonquil. She likes her name but it is often misspelt. We call her JQ and her name is very good for nicknames such as Jonkiwi

Tee hee, I can't think of many boys (even post ones) who'd like to be named after a flower.

For me, it conjurs up the tranquil cool tall stems and the sunny little faces of the jonquil plant - brilliant for a tall slim girl (we're all very tall in our family)

Could be trying too hard, but maybe we should sometimes try harder Smile...if you like jonquils rather than the ubiquitous lilies or daisies, well why ever not?

Actually, if one aimed to please everyone with a child's name one would never stray further than the very popular Jacks and Olivias

As for nicknames, would Jonny or Jonty be any worse for a girl than Georgie for a girl named Georgia?

Doesn't sound very feminine to me, probably because the emphasis is on the "Jon" part. Jonty is short for Jonathon btw.

I like it. Amanda in THE GLASS MENAGERIE is always going on about her gentlemen callers bringing her jonquils. Apparently they are a form of daffodil.

Madre: you say it like "John-quill".
I believe that Jonty is a separate boy name.
I prefer Daphne too, though, come to think of it.

I could only imagine meeting a lovely interesting person with this name.
My children have different names, I find it's not the other children who question their names but adults. Go with your heart.

I thought it was a boys name, maybe with Jonty for short.(I like this.)

It's not bad for a unusual name I think it could be a grower, one poeple first of all say 'ooooh what??' and then grow to like and seems normal.

Jonty could be nice for a boy or a girl, I rather like unisex type names.

Have you considered Jemima with Jem for short? I love Jem for a boy or a girl too.

Love it...it's my sister's name. She hates it though. Mainly due to having to repeat it / spell it to people when meeting them for the first time. Wish it was my name, she, on the other hand, longs for a plain common name like mine.

I'm sorry, I just really dislike it. It's got an 'onk' sound in it. Why would you have an 'onk' in a girls' name, or any name?
