Ruben or Reuben?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
bronze · 25/08/2010 00:03

Reuben

tell him unless he can find some spanish/german etc ancestry pretty damn quick then if you don't spell it your (the correct) way everyone will just assume hes thick.

LJS666 · 25/08/2010 00:10

Reuben - and I would have the middle name James.

Kenny Rogers song - Reuben James.

lovechoc · 26/09/2010 21:06

I have a Reuben and agree with many others - we looked at the alternative spellings of the name before DS arrived and tbh, they all looked very wrong. Reuben seemed the most 'correct' spelling, for want of a better word! It just looked right and we both agreed on the name straight away, which is a bonus really!

OP I feel for you - had lots of disagreements trying to come up with a name but we finally settled on this one - but only this!lol

Good luck.

deliakate · 26/09/2010 21:12

I ended up going with DH's preferred spelling as it meant I could get the name I wanted - he wouldn't budge and was willing to pick another instead.
It does mean I'm not that vigilent when people spell it the 'english' way, and more often than not, he has the wrong spelling on his name badges etc......

sethstarkaddersmum · 26/09/2010 21:16

ah, my parents used to have a gardener called Reuben. He had a pet pig.

(lovely name btw)

BellaBearisWideAwake · 26/09/2010 21:19

Is it just me, or is the effect of 55 posts saying 'Reuben' to make the word Reuben look really odd? Like when you say a word over and over and over.

(also: Reuben, definitely)

Midge25 · 26/09/2010 21:31

Reuben. Definitely

Jojay · 26/09/2010 21:33

My DS was born 4 weeks ago. I did a bit of research to see which was the way most people would spell it (this thread included!) and decided on Reuben. However I think we only got one card with it spelt correctly, even my sister got it wrong! Most people have been writing Rueben. We haven't actually officially registered his name yet but I think we'll stick with Reuben.

lovechoc · 27/09/2010 20:01

Tuschinski people will get used to the name eventually. DS2 is now nearly 10 weeks old and to begin with when the birth was announced, DH had said verbally Reuben but many relatives used 'Ruben' when writing out congrats via text or FB replies. However it seems to have sorted itself out now...until he starts school! lol Then we'll have to go through it all over againGrin

PosieParker · 27/09/2010 20:03

Reuben

lovechoc · 27/09/2010 20:03

When I was doing research into this I found that Ruben was the most common way of spelling it in recent years, and that Reuben is hardly used at all. I also looked at the amount of Reubens born last year - there were not that many. But I can see there being a bit of a revival!

JaxTellersOldLady · 27/09/2010 20:04

have only read page 1, but I know 2 people called Ruben - both spelled without the E.

PosieParker · 27/09/2010 20:04

(I have a Mabel and some people spell in Mable...so spell it right as people will get it wrong if there's any room for error anyway!)

lovechoc · 27/09/2010 20:05

Another thing you may get is 'oh - as in Reubens, the formula 1 racing car driver?' I had this last week when out at a restaurant.

Tuschinski · 27/09/2010 22:09

Lovechoc, according to the official 2008 stats there were 767 Reubens born and only 260 Rubens (not to mention the 3 Rhubens, 4 Reubans and 4 Rubans - now they definitely can't spell!) that was the main reason I decided Reuben was the usual spelling.

bigbluebump · 27/09/2010 22:12

The benefit of Ruben is that it works in all languages and is easily pronouncable to everyone.

In German, for example, Reuben would be pronounced Roy-ben.

ShowOfHands · 27/09/2010 22:19

OP didn't go for Reuben. Have searched seeing as the thread was a few weeks old. Grin

PosieParker · 28/09/2010 07:34

SOH What did she go for?

MaryBS · 28/09/2010 07:50

Flynn Jago. I searched too, my curiosity got the better of me :o

PosieParker · 28/09/2010 08:30

Sad Reuben much nicer!
