Holiday acquaintance: is this a fair message?

SpamelaHamderson · 23/10/2026 23:24

I’ve just come back off holiday. By coincidence, an old friend, Beth, was in the same resort at the same time. We’re not close - I haven’t seen her in person for about ten years - but we keep in touch on Facebook. So it seemed natural to meet up with her and her friend Jo while I was there.

Now, Beth is also friends with Mel, an ex-friend of mine. Mel and I were once very close, but we had a spectacular and permanent falling out. The only time Beth has referenced this is when she passed on a happy birthday message. I said I was sorry she’d been dragged into it and told her she shouldn’t feel she had to pass on messages. That was that.

Anyway, when I had a drink with Beth and Jo, Beth asked if there was any chance of me and Mel making things up. I said absolutely not; too much has happened and the friendship is beyond repair. I thought I was probably going to have to give Jo a basic explanation, but before I could, she said, “Oh, you’re THAT Spamela! Oh yes, Mel’s been really upset about your falling out. She’d love to make it up.”

I felt awkward, as I would have chanced changed the subject earlier had I known Jo knew her too. I reiterated that it was over. Jo started the whole “Oh, I’m sure you could sort it out; she just wants a chance to explain” routine. I shut it down and changed the subject, and made my excuses not long afterwards.

Anyway, it seems Jo has found me on social media and has been speaking to Mel, as Jo has messaged me saying Mel would really love the chance to explain, it all got out of hand etc., and couldn’t I just have one conversation with her? I was pretty annoyed, TBH. I have no idea why Jo would insert herself in this situation. Part of me wants to simply ignore the message, but I don’t want to give her an excuse to try again.

What do you think of this response? Does it toe the right line between friendly and firm?

“Hi Jo - I hope you enjoyed your holiday. You are kind to be concerned about your friend, but as I said on holiday, there is no going back for me and Mel and I don’t want to discuss it any further. Take care.”

Don’t ignore her, she is likely trying to be kind, your message is good, send it, and if she responds again, ignore,

LeopardOnEverything · Yesterday 12:39

Block the pair of them.

Did you tell Mel why you no longer wanted to be friends?

I'd block her without responding. There's nothing wrong with your message, but I find it weird and creepy that Jo has gone to the hassle of searching you out on Facebook for the sole purpose of harassing you, after one meeting. I wouldn't want to encourage someone like her by responding.

I'd cool it with the Beth too, they're all friends and they've obviously all been gossiping about you at some point and still are recently if it's enough to elicit that response you initially got from Jo. Do you really need a Facebook friend you never see, who is friends with your enemy, friends with at least one other weird person (Jo) and who gossips about you?

I see why you’d say that, but I honestly don’t think Beth has been gossiping about me. The closest she ever got to getting involved was passing on the happy birthday message many years ago; when I asked her not to again, she respected it.

The flip side is why should I cut contact with someone just because she’s friends with someone I don’t want to be in contact with? We’re all adults. As for Jo, knowing Mel the way I do, she’ll have been given a “I lost my best friend over one mistake!!” sob story.

This really isn’t what the thread is about. There’s zero chance of my contacting her again; I just want to know how to handle Jo’s message.

You're far too friendly - I'd go for "Hi Jo, you've only heard one side, it's none of your business, and I don't even know you. Don't contact me again."

EmmaB1309 · Yesterday 13:45

I think your message is great! Leaves no room for doubt. And if she keeps trying, ignore.

Dollymylove · Yesterday 13:53

We need to know what the falling out was about so we can decide who's side we are on 😉

NotSorry · Yesterday 14:00

You could always add in what the Queen said "some recollections may vary"

Error404FucksNotFound · Yesterday 14:02

I would just say "no thank you. Please dont ask again"
If she hassles you after that then block her.

Controversial response!.... I would personally have the uncomfortable chat with Mel. You're clearly over it, so it won't affect your life anyway! If only to avoid further situations like this.

And Jo.... Slide on!

saraclara · Yesterday 14:06

"please don't insert yourself into my personal business. I will not be discussing this any further"

Forward the message to Beth. Write WTAF under it.

It must have been a bad situation! I have a situation with my best friend of 35 years! Cheated on me with my partner... But I'd still have the chat.... Because I need to understand why the hell!

That would be you, as the wronged party, wanting an explanation though. I want nothing from Mel.

I’d go one of two ways. Ignore and leave on read or be blunt “it’s not your business, don’t message me again about this” end of. I haven’t got time for some people dictating my life to me

tinyspiny · Yesterday 14:29

I think your message is fine but for absolute clarity I’d go for
‘ hi Jo , I have absolutely no intention of having any contact with Mel and would appreciate it if you did not try to interfere in my business in the future . Hope you enjoyed your holiday , spamela ‘ .

Happyjoe · Yesterday 14:42

I couldn't imagine being that, I don't know, bored that I would have to insert myself into another person's drama and get involved like she has.
Ignore them all!

Is there anything they could've said/explained that would've made it better though? I'd not put myself through it in your shoes but we are indeed all different. Sorry this has happened to you. x

Darkines · Yesterday 14:52

You are too nice.
I'd want to tell Jo to fxxk off and mind her own business and perhaps get a life.
But I'm post menopause.

Hi Jo, I'd appreciate if you would respect my privacy and decision in this matter, and NOT mention it to me again.

The Jo's of this world are a complete pain in the arse.

IronEverything · Yesterday 15:02

I think your message is nicer than I would be TBH.

MargotLeadbetterOBE · Yesterday 15:36

Block Jo

Poppingby · Yesterday 15:46

I may be projecting as I have a friend I've fallen out with because she was manipulative/self centred over a long time and something happened that just made me realise I didn't want to put up with that shit any more. I think your message is great. It might help you to think of Jo as being in Mel's (Meg's!) clutches just as you were for ages and no doubt everything will be relayed word for word, so your neutral but firm message is just right.
