AIBU to feel horrified at the number of Motability vehicles being provided?

Just read this in the Telegraph about what the Americans think of our welfare spending:

“It also shocks Americans to learn that almost one in every five new cars sold in Britain is provided through Motability, the taxpayer-backed car scheme. The equivalent in the United States would be every Chevy, GMC, Buick and Cadillac sold through welfare. Or every Ford”

One of my friend’s daughters, aged 27, who has never worked, has several children with various diagnoses and is a single parent recently received a top of the range car, got to choose the colour and was given a ‘big reveal’ at the garage when she collected it. She has now been given a new four bedroomed detached house, something my own hardworking children could never manage.

Something is very, very wrong in this country.

I am paying into a pension and investments and have passive income to fund my retirement but thank you for your concern. If they remove the state pension I’ll manage.

Ah, so 'I'm all right, Jack'

There's some right nutters on this thread.

That is putting it politely.

plasticplate · 22/10/2026 21:40

I'm glad my son didn't get his motability car wrapped up like a present. He doesn't like things that are wrapped up. When he gets his new one next year I will have to remind them not to do a big unveiling.

ODFOD.

Didn’t realise we’ve gone back to the times where disabled people shouldn’t be allowed outings or even to be around other people.

Absolutely sick of this fucking agenda lately.

Adhs is not a life limiting disability. No one mentioned severely disabled, unable to feed themselves or walk people. Those who don’t work do not deserve a new house and a car. The fact it’s a possibility is a joke tbh

XenoBitch · 22/10/2026 21:41

Greenismyfavouritecolournow · 22/10/2026 21:38

Why wouldn’t they go?

Are they street homeless and desperate? No. So why would they? Unless under your regime, they would be forced to be.

My job will disappear in a generation or two. The passive income won’t. Thankfully we provide something people need to survive.

What a load of bollox. Why would there be a big reveal when she would already know the make and colour of the car?

It happens all the time with new cars.

And yet to meet the criteria for motability you have to have a life limiting illness so CLEARLY it affects that child/that family enough to warrant it. Anyone who has DLA/PIP knows how stringent the process is.

What happens? People unwrapping them 'with a flourish'?

Have you ever leased a Motability car?i

I suppose they could stay with family ? If I had the choice of communal living or the street I’d choose the communal living. I’d work damn hard to get myself out of there if I didn’t like it. Or you know I wouldn’t have three children by 27 in the first place. It’s almost like not having children isn’t actually a choice in 2026.

When they buy them, maybe.

Not leasing. That would be daft.

Are they living with family if they’re not homeless ? Perhaps they can stay there then?

Yabu. My friend who has worked since she was 18 has ms now and struggles to walk. She has sacrificed her pip money to get a car which means she can take her boys to football. She sits in the car and watches them. She when well is doing gcse maths in attempt to get her gcse to help her boys and also to get a job she can do sitting down rather than her physical job she trained for. The car has given her freedom and the ability to get out when her body doesn't allow her too. She's in her last 40s and it's only been the last three years when she had to stop work. Don't ever judge someone until you walk in their shoes.

But the mums (and again, dads can have disabled kids too), don't always have family about to help.
And thanks to our welfare system and safety net, no disabled kids are being turfed out on the street. That is some bizarre thing you are coming up with and solving with your workhouse suggestion.

If you don’t have a job you don’t pay tax. Paying some tax back to the government out of the money they GIVE you in the first place isn’t ’paying tax’ 😂

You get PIP when you work as well. My stepdad gets it and he's always worked full time, he had to have a limb amputation. They also write to him to ask if his condition has changed.
My friends dad gets PIP as he is totally deaf. Again, works full time. She has to go with him to appointments to interpret. They randomly make random, very loud noises to test if he is faking. The most recent one they said "oh he's completely deaf isn't he!" She didn't bother to degrade him by interpreting that.

So many people on here obviously in the same situation as the lady in the op. Don’t forget your children will turn 18 and then your benefits will stop.

That's a shame; I'd happily chip in for a ticker tape parade complete with fireworks and marching band just to annoy the people who get annoyed by Motability.

Me thinks deliberately offensive to get a reaction.

Eh? I am not in the situation in the OP, which sounds wildly made up, just pushing back against all the nonsense that I am reading regarding PIP, or Motability. Hth.
