To think everything will be unrecognisable in 50 years

Just thinking about how different the UK was in the 70s and how change is supercharged now by tech and mass migration and the loss of shared cultural reference points in TV and newspapers and radio.

I live in Glasgow and many parts of it are no longer at all Scottish-seeming apart from the old sandstone tenements. What even is Scottish any more? It's hard to imagine Scottish independence being taken up by the new communities. But what's next?

I think human societies are programmed to self destruct every so often in the absence of external numbers control pressures and I think that's what's starting now across Europe. We have never had it so good in the history of time yet rage flourishes

What can we do as individuals, I'm just not sure

An uncritical left wing agenda which has an overall detriment to the UK but enables her sense of her family’s acceptance and safety,
even though it’s illogical.

Why are you bringing her family into it? Not all of us think that multiculturalism is to the detriment of the UK.

Does it make you feel clever to be so patronising and dismissive? Because it doesn't make you look clever.

She's doing it because she has run out of other arguments.

Also, unifying culture is really really good for people. People need to connect to things beyond their own life circumstances and passing trends, it’s good for the psyche and sense of perspective. I certainly feel calmer and happier when taking in the beauty of an old building, or a local landmark, or when I see native wildlife, and feeling a spiritual connection to it. I don’t care if people laugh and call me a sad NIMBY. I was dropping DD at her Saturday club at a stately home yesterday and was completely awe struck by the beautiful blue sky, the lush green rolling countryside, the birdsong, the sound of the stream. Truly stunning. Reconnects me to England.

If you strip people of heritage and culture and convince them nothing is sacred and only has the meaning you personally ascribe to it, you end up with Frankenstein states like the USA who descend into commercialism and capitalism. Nothing there is sacred, everything has a price, nothing is appreciated for its significance beyond its mere physical presence.

I live in London. Sometimes I have a day where I chat a lot to people in my community. The Bulgarian barista, the Turkish dry cleaner, the postie from Ivory Coast, the Muslim receptionist at my GP’s, and I have lots of fun and rewarding small interactions. I love it! Yesterday I learned a lot about her culture from my Serbian hairdresser. It makes me feel privileged to live in a country like England, where I can meet so many people from different backgrounds. It makes me love this country even more.

There are lots of different reasons to like England, and that’s fine. Though you are right, parts of rural England are breathtakingly gorgeous. Nothing NIMBY about stating that!

TBF, MrsBennetspoornerves brought up her family up first by mentioning her husband.

I brought up my husband because the pp was making claims about India which she could not substantiate. And I wanted to point out that, as an Indian person, my DH did not recognise her characterisation of his country. With hindsight, I should have left him out of it and referenced the Indian government's position straight away.

My family had no relevance to the rest of the debate whatsoever, and the pp had no right to pretend that she knows what motivates my beliefs or where they have come from. Apart from anything, her assumption is simply wrong - my political views are directly linked to the values that my parents passed on to me, rather than to my own family situation.

My post was simply in response to PP asking why the other PP
has brought up your family.

They didn’t. You did.

That’s all.

My family was only relevant to the section of the conversation of the debate relating to whether India is a monocultural country.

The pp chose to bring my family into other aspects of the debate where it clearly wasn't relevant, purely in an attempt to patronise me and dismiss my views. If you want to sanction that kind of behaviour, that's your choice. Personally, I think it looks a bit desperate.

I understand the way you see things, but you did open that particular door.

Anyway, as you were.

TBF, MrsBennetspoornerves brought up her family up first by mentioning her husband.

She mentioned her husband as part of the discussion she was involved in. That doesn't mean someone can use it to attack her and accuse her of things she didn't say or sentiments she hasn't expressed.

well SKA was late 70s, early 80s and Massive Attack were formed in 1987 so I wouldn't include either of those as example of modern music.

Anything post Bach is modern to me.

Perhaps I should have said pop music.

SKA to Massive Attack is a good example of how multiculturalism has shaped our culture in a positive way.

is that why modern music is so shit?

I remember my dad saying that modern music was shit in the 1970s.

The teenage me replied 'It's not for you'.

If you don't like the current music then it's almost certainly meant for a generation younger than yours.

I worry that the U.K. and other European countries will have “gone bust”. Or certainly not be anywhere near as wealthy or powerful as what it currently is/pretends it is.

The economy is on a downhill slide with a lack of manufacturing and a spiralling welfare bill. It’s unsustainable. Not only will such countries struggle to finance current welfare and services people are losing their shit about it. Look at France currently. Apparently over there they’re struggling to balance the books so are making hard choices and people aren’t unhappy. At some point will a country say they can no longer finance welfare, education, healthcare, etc? And society breaks down. France is predicted to have a govt debt equivalent to 120% of its GDP by next year.

And quietly in the background countries like China and to a lesser extent India are ascending. China’s the leading manufacturing power and that’s only increasing

so if European countries in 50 years time are poorer in relation to countries like China where does that leave us? A new world order? If China and other countries hold the cards from a trade pov? PWC predicts by 2050 6 out of the 7 leading economies will be from (currently) emerging countries. They’re talking about Indonesia and also African countries such as Nigeria. Thats only 24 years away!

Currently people talk about there being a problem with “illegal immigrants” coming here. Maybe by 2050 Brits will be trying to smuggle themselves into Nigeria or India! In search of a better life. 😁.

if you look back in history Europe being so dominant throughout world has really only been for a couple,of hundred years. So maybe it’s more of a reset back to how things used to be.

Er because of the country being borderline bankrupt, three days weeks, doing homework by candlelight when the power was off.

Didn't sound fab...

The power cuts were only over 9 weeks and they were not all the time. As a teen I remember seeing the petrol ration book but not doing homework by candles or parrafin lamp.

My dcs in their early 20s die of envy of my era! When TOTP was must-have viewing and the charts had meaning. When there was all sorts in the top 40, from pop to rock to country to dreadful novelty songs that came out of nowhere.

There was definitely a golden age of pop music and it ain’t now. What classic songs have there been lately? Answer not needed.

Do you think that “diverse looking people” can’t be racist? Well, in the words of some who haunt these threads, “educate yourself”. There is huge animosity and conflict between different immigrant groups. Last year there was violence between Muslims and Sikhs in Leicester (I think). That’s small fry compared with the rival gang conflicts in France, especially in schools.

When people grow up with differences they're less likely to consider those differences important. That's all I meant.

Quite. I remember playing Subbutteo floodlight by candles.

Great things about the 1970s
Fashion - Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci
The Music - Queen, Abba, Punk, Glam, Disco, Bowie, It's CHRIISSSTMAS
Film - Star Wars, Jaws, The Godfather
Equality legislation
Great telly
Concorde
The Silver Jubilee
Interior design was FUN
Food got better and more varied

Brilliant times. Bounces off on space hopper.

Totally agree. Everything from Ernie the Fastest Milkman in the West to Bohemian Rhapsody.

If I'm bored I watch this and marvel at the young men's reactions. Excellent.

Bohemian rhapsody has to be one of the greatest British songs of all time.
