On way back from seeing family with dp. Dp driving. He is quite particular about his car, won’t let me or anyone eat in it etc. we stopped at a services to get coffee and some
shopping because we are in a bit of a rush to get home. I was starving and wanted a burger, dp said no time. And he wouldn’t let me eat it in the car. So I picked up a pack of crisps and ate a few while we walked back to the car. I knew he wouldn’t want me to finish them in the car so I folded over the bag and put it in the bag with the rest of the shopping.
dp gets really narky and said he can smell the crisps and now his car stinks of crisps why couldn’t I have just waited an hour to eat till we got home
hes now in a bad mood
Who is bu!

Him obviously!!! Is he driving a Tesla?

shellyleppard · 16/10/2026 16:49

Sod that I would have had a burger and bugger the wait

TheWytch · 16/10/2026 16:49

You for being with such a man

MrsBananaman · 16/10/2026 16:49

Ew he sounds repulsive

Yep! He is treating you like a small child.

Namechangetheyarewatching · 16/10/2026 16:52

He's a controlling arse

Ilikegreenshoes · 16/10/2026 16:52

Wow! That's the first time I've ever seen 100% YANBU on the poll!

He is being ridiculous. I understand not wanting food to be eaten in the car (though that's a bit precious) but complaining that his car smells like crisps makes him sound like a belligerent child. How embarrassing for him.

JengaCupboard · 16/10/2026 16:52

He's being ridiculous. If he doesn't want food in the car he waits for you to eat first. Muppet.

Took my car to the hand car-wash the other week. Half a sleeve of mince pies were retrieved from under the back storage compartment. From last years Christmas eve dog walk.

I'm afraid I can't relate...

TheIntricaciesOfHarpUpkeepAndMaintenance · 16/10/2026 17:00

Your DP is a dickhead.

Not that it matters, but I bet it’s a shit car, as well.

somanychristmaslights · 16/10/2026 17:03

Unless he’s driving a £600k McLaren, he’s being a knob

Does driving a spendy car entitle you to behave like a knob?
A knob is a knob is a knob!

PaulaPickford · 16/10/2026 17:08

I thought you were going to say that you're not allowed crisps in the car, he doesn't have crisps in the car and you found a crisp/packet/crumb/blonde hair etc.. 🤔

SixTimesALady · 16/10/2026 17:08

My partner has a really sensitive sense of smell and can't stand having smelly food in the car. I try to respect that because I don't want him to be miserable. I don't think he's a child because of it. I'm autistic and he respects my many sensitivities! We care about each other.

The crisps were in with the shopping though? And I don’t think many people would think of crisps in the back seat or boot as being a smelly food.

Same. I would just park my arse and scarf it down. No man on earth would tell me when I could and couldn't eat.

That's fine and a good thing. If he cared about his wife he would have given her ten minutes to grab a burger or at least let her finish her crisps before getting in the car.

I actually think the fact you didn't feel you could say "I'm finishing this bag of crisp before I get in" is quite sad and a bit worrying. I guess he would have gotten in a mood about that too so you couldn't win? Seems with your dh you are dammed if you do and dammed if you don't.

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 16/10/2026 17:14

"Sorry we're late, my DH wouldn't let us eat crisps in the car"

"Walkers?"

"Yes, we had no other option"

HideousKinky · 16/10/2026 17:15

You should have offered him a choice - either he gives you time to eat something before continuing your journey or he lets you eat in the car.
One or the other.

GasPanic · 16/10/2026 17:15

Eating food in a car does mess the carpets up.

Bits of crisp work themselves into the mat fibres and are difficult to vaccuum out.

I used to have an old car and eat in that and it was really manky. I don't eat in the new one and the carpets are a lot better.

If he loves his car that much he should have an interior polish spray or something. A bit of a spray of that should return it to the old smell.

But you should respect his space and he should respect yours.

BertieMartini · 16/10/2026 17:16

He sounds OTT but I also hate anyone eating in my car.

Beyond a toddler, there is no need to eat in a car, let alone a burger!

Having said that, YANBU

Wildgoat · 16/10/2026 17:17

Wow what a twat,

EnjoythemoneyJane · 16/10/2026 17:18

WTF? He could ‘smell’ the crisps?! A steaming meat pie or fish & chips or McDonalds I could understand, but a rolled-over half packet of crisps can’t stink a car out! He IBVVU.

Mind you, when the kids were little I took my car to one of those outdoor valet places because they had an ‘inside & out’ cleaning offer on, and they took one look and refused to do it 😂. So maybe I’m not the best judge of who’s BU.

NerWayGerAway · 16/10/2026 17:23

I voted YANBU but if they were anything cheesy or oniony then perhaps he’s not quite so unreasonable to object to the smell but he is unreasonable to sulk about it.

Anguscoo · 16/10/2026 17:26

He needs to grow a pair ! Obvs car owns him and doesn’t own the car ! Sad man indeed.

Hollowvoice · 16/10/2026 17:26

He could have avoided the crisp smell if he'd waited 5 mins while you had the burger you wanted...
