On way back from seeing family with dp. Dp driving. He is quite particular about his car, won’t let me or anyone eat in it etc. we stopped at a services to get coffee and some
shopping because we are in a bit of a rush to get home. I was starving and wanted a burger, dp said no time. And he wouldn’t let me eat it in the car. So I picked up a pack of crisps and ate a few while we walked back to the car. I knew he wouldn’t want me to finish them in the car so I folded over the bag and put it in the bag with the rest of the shopping.
dp gets really narky and said he can smell the crisps and now his car stinks of crisps why couldn’t I have just waited an hour to eat till we got home
hes now in a bad mood
Who is bu!

What would have happened if you had said no, I am very hungry, I am eating now before I go back to the car?

RosaBaby2 · 16/10/2026 17:30

We love a car picnic here. YANBU.

JustPassingThyme · 16/10/2026 17:37

Does he drive a hermetically sealed tube on wheels? Why can't he roll down a window if he doesn't like the smell?

Darck · 16/10/2026 17:38

Do you really need to ask if YABU? I'd be amazed if this kind of behaviour is confined solely to what his car smells of.

What an absolute gentleman he sounds.

"Sorry we're late, my DH wouldn't let us eat crisps in the car"

"Walkers?"

"Yes, we had no other option"

😂

He’s in bad mood because you ate some crisps?? He wouldn’t let you have a burger? You’re not allowed to eat in the car? Yeah he can fuck right off.

Pinkflamingo10 · 16/10/2026 17:41

What a sad sad little man.
i would have eaten a burger in the car. And I would’ve spilled sauce for sure and rubbed my greasy hands on the seats. Yep.

Wishimaywishimight · 16/10/2026 17:43

He's easily annoyed!

hagchic · 16/10/2026 17:44

I don't think either of you are being unreasonable, but I'm with him.

I have a stupidly strong sense of smell, it makes life difficult at times - like people who struggle with other people being loud. I deal with it myself because it is my issue.

I also don't allow people to eat in my car - because it's my car and there is not a situation that I have been in where someone has needed urgently to eat before they have a medical episode. I acknowledge if someone was Type1diabetic I might make an exception. I never eat in other people's cars and indeed try to avoid them - because they are often really smelly.

Was there no time in the whole day where food was available to you? I know you were hungry but a few crisps would not have made any difference to that hunger.

You knew he was not going to like it, but you decided to do it anyway - he's going to feel a certain way about that.

It just feels like you pushed because you thought he was wrong and you were right.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 16/10/2026 17:44

Cheese and Onion? out of interest...

Your DH is being a complete fuss pot. Is he always this bad tempered?

Hatty65 · 16/10/2026 17:45

I'd have had the burger. With chips, relish and mayo.

And I'd have probably dropped some on his seats. Not maliciously, but I'm generally clumsy. But I'm not being told I'm not 'allowed' food if I'm hungry.

Ponderingwindow · 16/10/2026 17:46

If he doesn’t want me eating in the car, we are stopping for a snack. I’m more likely to get travel sick on an empty stomach.

Actually, I’m not sure I’d be willing to abide by the rule at all. Projectile vomit is much harder to clean up than a few cracker crumbs.

CrapADoodleCupcake · 16/10/2026 17:46

Are you married to a bloodhound OP? 🤯🤦‍♀️

He sounds quite controlling.

TeaCupTinsel · 16/10/2026 17:47

Imagine being more concerned with a car than your hungry partner and their wellbeing.

Cars can be vacuumed (if he's that precious!)

Does he have any redeeming features or is this the tip of the 'bellend' iceberg?

SouthLondonMum22 · 16/10/2026 17:47

Why are you letting him dictate when you can eat? What was the rush that you couldn't stop for a burger?

Flamingojune · 16/10/2026 17:49

Why did your family not feed you on the visit

TheQuickCat · 16/10/2026 17:50

I think crisps smell weird. Unless they're ready salted. Were they a bit wiffy, op?

hagchic · 16/10/2026 17:51

If they were Prawn cocktail then YABU - they are absolutely vile to smell - and they linger.

Fifthtimelucky · 16/10/2026 17:52

I am not at all precious about my car but I wouldn’t want anyone eating a burger in it.

With crisps, it would depend on the flavour. I can’t bear the smell of cheese and onion crisps on people’s breath so I wouldn’t want to be stuck in a car sitting next to someone who had been eating them. It’s interesting that a couple of other people have mentioned cheese and onion, so it’s obviously not just me!

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/10/2026 17:54

Well, he’s BU for being an obsessive car-wanker, and you are BU for putting up with it.

AnswerIsNo · 16/10/2026 17:57

Sounds like he spends hours polishing the thing and looking longingly at it every time he walks past

at some point, he will wise up and realise its a personal A to B device made from metal, plastic and fancy electronics

Sounds like OP would have liked to have eaten more than a few crisps, but he wouldn't allow the time to do so!

Fine if you don't want people eating in your car, it's your car, you can do what you like. But the only reason there was an open bag of crisps in the car, is because he wouldn't let OP finish the bloody things.

He sounds a complete twat, why does he think it's reasonable for OP to wait an hour to eat, when he wouldn't even wait 10 minutes?!

AlwaysExtraHot · 16/10/2026 18:01

He's a tit. he can smell the crisps? What is he, a sniffer dog?

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 16/10/2026 18:02

Please let the car be a Kia Picanto
