To expect people ill with Covid stay home?

This week, my manager and a friend who goes to my exercise class are ill with Covid. I don't know if they've tested, but they've both said they have it. However one is still coming into the office and the other still attending the exercise class. AIBU or overreacting here... but why don't they stay home until clear? Even if 'feeling 95% better' wouldn't you wait until potentially exposing others? I can't help but feel mad at them both for being so selfish. I often look after an elderly relative and can't risk passing Covid on to her as she is frail. I get life can't be on pause forever but my manager can get paid sick leave and my friend can miss a class, it isn't like there's anything at stake...

If they feel well enough, I see no problem with coming in to work or doing classes. How would they know it is Covid they have anyway?

If people stayed home (where possible) when they have Covid - or any other infectious illness - then there would be less of it around, and less need to stay home …. Because you’re ill less often!!

Covid is very different to cold and flu sadly. Not just long Covid - which can be utterly debilitating and last for years - but it can also cause organ damage. Plus it’s recently been proven to cause long-term damage to people’s immune systems, so it’s likely that repeat infections are playing into the rise in lots of other illnesses.

It’s a no brainer. If you can stay home, then you should. Why risk ruining someone’s life if you can avoid it? 🤯

Yabu for many people it’s like a cold now and work for many people doesn’t take to kindly to people taking time off work when they’re not really that ill.
I’ve been in work recently with it, unless we’re pretty much on deaths door we’re expected in.

I am also a tutor and prefer to model a sense of responsibility by not just taking of myself, my students and the community by NOT infecting people. And I disapprove of students who come to my office sneezing and hacking and running a temperature. Coworkers also.

@maxslice Are you paid for time off sick?

@maxslice Are you paid for time off sick?

What’s your obsession with people being paid for time of sick?

You should know the answer any way:

  1. employees are paid for time off sick. Since April 2026 it’s become a day 1 right
  2. self-employed presumably make an allowance for it in their hourly rate (they’d be foolish not to)

So…..? Can you help us understand the base of your obsession? Or is a peculiar chip on your shoulder for some reason

FunPartyIdeas · Today 13:14

@ExpectMore I'm employed through an agency. I don't get paid if off ill. So you're wrong.
Perhaps you could let the lady reply rather than butting in please?

Edited

Agency workers, or at least any I’ve used, have a higher hourly rate to account for the fact they’re not paid when on holiday / sick etc.

Either way, it still doesn’t explain your obsession with it!

FunPartyIdeas · Today 13:41

@ExpectMore Let's ask agency workers about that, shall we? 🤣

Can ask them all you want. I know exactly how it works as I use a stack of them at work

I thought we had already clarified that SSP is not the same as being paid for being off sick. The difference in a days pay for me would be over £100.

@ExpectMore OK. You know more than me, M'Lady. I've only been agency for 2 years after all...
But is really lovely to see you pay them more out of the goodness of your own heart and business comes second ❤️

@HappyLizard23 I thought we had too 😀

I’m surprised that anyone employs you given your tone and general lack of understanding of how business works. Generally it’s good for business to treat employees well, once you realise that and get the green eyed monster back in its box it might all click 😉

Accepted it’s less but still paid.

This topic is a little like paying nursery fees when kids are off sick / on holiday. People forget that if you didn’t and only paid when in, you’d just pay more per the hour when they’re in as the business needs to generate the same income to cover the fixed costs (and will assumed an average attendance across the year to help them do so).

So there’s no point getting worked out about “not getting paid” or “getting paid less” when off. You need to look at it from the bigger picture perspective

just read the message I was responding to…

For what I can tell they’re happy enough. Never have any attrition issues and have folk from other departments wanting to transfer in. So all good thanks :)

Is this still being said whilst ignoring questions about how people should make provision to cover the shortfall SSP would leave while not having the financial capability to actually do so?

FunPartyIdeas · Today 15:41

@x2boys Thank you. I am just choosing to ignore that poster now as she clearly is just out to pick a fight without having any understanding of what it is to just about get by financially.
She says she has, but the reality couldn't be further from the truth.
