To expect people ill with Covid stay home?

LakelandHiker · 12/10/2026 18:09

This week, my manager and a friend who goes to my exercise class are ill with Covid. I don't know if they've tested, but they've both said they have it. However one is still coming into the office and the other still attending the exercise class. AIBU or overreacting here... but why don't they stay home until clear? Even if 'feeling 95% better' wouldn't you wait until potentially exposing others? I can't help but feel mad at them both for being so selfish. I often look after an elderly relative and can't risk passing Covid on to her as she is frail. I get life can't be on pause forever but my manager can get paid sick leave and my friend can miss a class, it isn't like there's anything at stake...

It’s incredible, and frightening.

The difference between a day of work at NMW and SSP is approximately £75. So in their world view, someone other than themselves life is worth less than £75.

Which makes you wonder:

  1. why do they think the nhs exists? If life is worth less than £75, why does the NHS even bother to preserve it given most interventions would cost more than £75
  2. if life is worth less than £75, what’s the value? £70? £60? £50? £20? Would they maybe spare a stranger their life if it only cost them £5…?

It’s genuinely frightening they have such little regard for others and that their world view is so them centric.

Imagine we all thought like that, the world would be a mess.

Im not sure thats fair. Im very much a germophobe and would always wfh if I had even a cold. But then I CAN. I dont think someone prioritising not getting fired over the potential of spreading covid is being selfish though. People have rent to pay. Families to support. I think going anywhere you dont NEED to go is a dick move. And you should do whatever you can whilst among others to avoid spreading it but some people just cant take time off if they feel.well.enouhh to go in.

I'm a manager who gets paid sick leave but that doesn't mean I can take days off if I'm well enough to work. It's not just about money, it's about responsibility, work load mounting in your absence, strain on colleagues.
That's not to say you drag yourself in at all costs, just that you make sensible decisions that strike a balance. The guidance is if you're well enough carry on as normal, so that's what I do. I practice good hygiene and would avoid getting too close to people if I could help it.

Correct. I’ve no idea why anyone should live in that situation where their outgoings are so at odds with their incomings. They need to cut their outgoings and / or increase incomings as being in a situation of not being able to afford a days sick (!) is not sustainable

Yet a huge part of society is in this situation.
There isn’t many people who can afford to lose a few days pay. It is very ignorant of certain people to assume that everyone has a safety net.
It isn’t sustainable that’s why poor people die earlier and suffer health problems than the financial better off. Financial stress takes years off your life.
Believe it or not, it is not possible to cut outgoings or increase income for a lot of people.

OneDreamyAquaEagle · 13/10/2026 08:11

Go into work if you say can't afford to take time off, but at least wear a properly fitted N95 mask to help prevent the spread of the virus to people who may be clinically vulnerable.

So there are businesses that don't allow employees to take time off work if they are ill without docking their pay?

I thought even if anyone was hourly paid they would be allowed paid sick leave.

Maybe I'm out of touch as I had a professional, salaried job but even as a student doing shop and cafe work I'd be paid if I was unwell .

You think like that brcsuse you can WFH
£75 maybe nothing to you but its not to a lot of people
If you are do ignorant and priviliged that you cant understsnd that im not even going to try and help you understand you clearly dont care about others less priviliged than yourself but expect them to put strangers before their own family.

No-one would get fired over taking a sick day due to Covid. To do so would be illegal and their employer wouldn’t have a leg to stand on.

datedsockthief · 13/10/2026 08:17

I'm going to guess that in theory people do care but they don't like seeing the price going out of their individual bank accounts as opposed to hidden in a tax. So they find reasons to justify not caring.

Just as I suspect an awful lot of people would find reasons why paying tax even towards eg children's cancer treatment was unreasonable, if there was a tick box on a form for it and contributing was optional.

The costs of precautions against infectious disease spread should be shared really. Shared over all of society and the whole economy, they'd actually be net gains not costs, too. Illness affects productivity in the general economy as well as using up NHS funds.

Another option is that people could of course still go to work but wear masks to reduce the risk to other people. Somehow there are always Reasons why that's not possible too. (I know it is impossible for some, but for most it's not.)

Would you stay at home with a cold?

If it was severe and risked infecting others, yes. I know businesses where this is what they tell employees. Work from home!

You seem obsessed with people who can wfh. To the extent that you assume everyone with a different world view to yours must only have it because they wfh.

Newsflash: some people just do the right thing, even if it inconveniences them

This is going to blow your mind but not everyone can " work from home"
HTH.

ThatOldWomanNextDoor · 13/10/2026 08:21

So can we have examples of companies where they dock pay if someone has to stay off work, ill?

These are zero hours jobs?

Because there must be very few jobs where staying away if you're ill means you get no pay.

Fortuity · 13/10/2026 08:22

I really don't think Covid should be treated like a bad cold. Anyone can get long Covid and that is bloody nasty. We need to limit the spread for that reason alone.

I understand, I grew up in poverty and have had to claw myself out of it as a young adult. I would however hazard a guess that the majority of those unable to take a days leave or invest in themselves actually could if they reprioritised a few things.

Or if you can't get a properly fitted one, just wear one anyway and adjust it to the best fit you can. Staying away from other people is still best, but don't let perfect be the enemy of good and not wear a mask at all just because it's not been fit tested. Anything that reduces the amount of virus you breathe out that reaches other people is a win. You'll likely infect fewer people, at least.

Anyone who is hand to mouth should seriously consider insurance for if they are away from work and won't be paid, or try to save.

Self employed freelancers don't get paid if they can't work but they have insurance to cover illnesses or save up for a rainy day.

OR up their skills and work for employers who cover time off for illness.

Those on sick leave are paid. They even changed the situation such that it’s better as of April ‘26.

For me in someways the pay is irrelevant on a principles level in someways as:

  1. if you’re unwell and can’t work, you need sick leave. So you need to account for that in your setup
  2. it’s wrong to knowingly transmit what you’re carrying when others are vulnerable (or even, just don’t want to feel shit!)

Just read back what you have written?
When people are living pay day to pay day
Things likr insrance and saving are an impossible dream for many
And how do you expect peoole to up their skills when they have no spare money?.

Bushwoolie · 13/10/2026 08:30

Flu is being unreasonable, COVID not so much. COVID is very much akin to a cold/cough these days. It's not as much of a risk anymore. The advice is to carry on as normal and only take time off if really unwell. The world no longer stops for it.

FunPartyIdeas · 13/10/2026 08:36

@maxslice And I bet you haven't been needing to pay an extortionate private rent for over a decade as you can't afford to buy your own house at 45?
You have no idea.
I'm not risking homelessness if I'm off with Covid. Especially not for my kids as main earner.
No pay if off, can't WFH.
As I say, not just exclusive to Covid. I went in miscarrying and not being able to use the bathroom for hours which was a very difficult experience, both emotionally and physically.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/10/2026 08:38

I'm just recovering from Covid, it's been horrendous, far worse than I had during the Pandemic. I'm wfh this week as it is spreading like wildfire. Do I want to infect half the office, no.
