Living next to asylum seeker HMO, ask me anything

JapanesePotWeed · 24/09/2026 20:28

As the title says. I live in a Victorian mid-terrace, wall-to-wall, garden-to-garden with an asylum seeker dispersal HMO. They were moved in nearly two years ago, replacing a multi-generation family that were living there before.
There is another HMO directly opposite my house, where asylum seekers get rooms once they are approved to remain but don't have an income to support themselves.

Not AIBU but more like AMA. I'm wondering what people would ask me if they really could ask anything. Does anyone actually want to know what it is like? I hear a lot of political point scoring in the media regarding this topic but no one actually talks to people like me!

Good to know our wonderfully efficient Home Office is giving criminals plenty of polite forewarning that they are about to be rounded up and deported from that address. As much as paying them £2k to leave sticks in my craw, I can't imagine it attracts many takers when it probably cost them more to get here in the first place and all they need to do is move on and set up as someone completely new in the next city with the next absolute sucker of a case worker. Then they can earn that 2k a month working illegally for Deliver-Fucking-Roo.

Honestly, you couldn't make it up. I think we are getting pretty close to a mass, collective short circuit of absolute apoplectic rage in this country. I don't know how many more big news stories of some atrocity committed by one of these people we can take before all hell will be unleashed.

I think there are some things you could make up, and conveniently finding a home office letter in your front guardian explaining your neighbours situation in detail so you have the information to share on Mumsnet is probably one of them.

Why do people add "funded by the government" after such statements? Surely people are aware that the asylum act covers such things? They can't fund rent, bills, food and english classes out of £49 per week and they aren't entitled to work or have recourse to any government funding such as student loans. I personally am more than happy that my taxes are going towards people wanting to better themselves with education. They don't have to take them, it's a choice and I'm very glad there are ones that do. There have been great stories in our city of refugees going onto postgrad education and young women who came here aged 8-10 who are now working in local government.

Edited

So still funded by the government then

If you believe the OP of course…

Yes, they can get in!
Doesn't help that I know of a case where a woman was shot with a crossbow and her husband killed by a neighbour (not an asylum seeker) who came in via the loft.
There should be a full wall for fire safety if nothing else but... I'll have to build it.The asylum contractors really will not help in any way!

Sort of off topic but this is surprising (horrifying) to me. When they made all the new rules about how a property must be before it can be rented out, why were fire/security walls between loft spaces not included? This might be worth it's own thread.
Thanks for posting OP. Do they seem to be friendly between themselves when of apparently different nationalities, and do other asylum seekers come to visit and party with them?
What do your other neighbours think?

Yes, that's part of the asylum seeker act. Most people should know this and not have to add "funded by the government" after every statement. No one refers to schools or NHS constantly as "funded by the government" when they speak of their child's school or hospital appointment. This addendum is purely for inciting otherness and hatred.

Would have been the perfect house for women but...

Most stay close to a year. Some probably fall foul of some regulations and disappear sooner. Or do a runner.
I found a Home Office letter in my front garden recently. It contained a court decision to deport based on REPEAT history of offending. There were two cases associated with an individual : drug dealing/possession and fly-tipping. The letter went on about how criminal behaviour is not compatible with being "of good character". As such, a decision has been made to deport.
ALTERNATIVELY, the person could leave the country willingly and they will be given £2000 and a seat on a flight to do so...

Who knew!⬆️ We pay 2k to convicted criminals to leave willingly. What a strange country this is!

well I knew. I remember when the program started and the fuss it caused.

People have different opinions.

You say "I personally am more than happy".

Other people are not.

You can describe their opinions as hatred, they can judge you as a bad person for that too. Millions do.

Saying ‘absolutely’ does not make a lie a fact.

Or you’re doing your job wrong.

I'm not involved in deciding who gets benefits but we ask as part of the information we take and the number one answer is universal credit, no matter who comes to us, it doesn't matter what term is on their visa or residency permit.

SadieandLucy · 25/09/2026 12:04

I am sorry if I am calling you a liar but the British Army were definitely there when I was there 1985 to 1988. Not quite as old as General Gordon but certainly one of the boats he used was still rotting in the Nile while we were there. They had been there since before we were and after we left. My husband worked for British Overseas Aid and I worked for the EEC. Why do you think you are so correct and not spouting arrant nonsense yourself.

MEARS is a huge company and cover literally hundreds of thousands of council properties. Their vans are everywhere .

Interestingly doing some reading about MEARS and its directors.

The private company, Mears Group plc was founded in 1988 in Gloucestershire, England. It was established as a maintenance contractor specifically focused on providing maintenance and repair services to the social housing sector.

This was at a time with a Conservative government and Thatcherite local government reform driven by privatisation, Compulsory Competitive Tendering (CCT), and the rollout of New Public Management.

Bob Holt, served as its long-time chairman and CEO before retiring from the board in January 2019, has previously referenced working closely with key Conservative Party figures early in his career, especially Lord Ashcroft (the former Conservative Party Chairman and prominent donor) at his ADT security firm. Holt cited Ashcroft as a major entrepreneurial inspiration for building up Mears

Mears net profit end of 2025 is £46.2 million.

There is a board of 37 officers, including Dame Claire Tickell who has a background in the social housing sector.

For balance Mears do have a foundation offering grants to disadvantaged and vulnerable communities.

They absolutely cannot claim UC. They have "no recourse to public funds" until and unless they are granted refugee status.

This was the same for all means-tested benefits and PIP during the entire 25 years I was a welfare rights adviser, which ended less than a year ago.

I suggest you pop into your local library, where you should find they have a copy of the CPAG Welfare Benefits Handbook. It sets out all the criteria re benefits for people coming to the UK from abroad, and you'll be able to check for yourself.

Perhaps their claims are fraudulent then? I see people 5 days a week who are both asylum seekers and in receipt of universal credit. The only way this might not be true is if they are lying to us (although their info does get checked upon referral) or a miscommunication? Unlikely to be happening multiple times every day, though.

The DWP themselves say you can only claim benefits if you're given refugee status i.e. asylum seekers can't claim benefits.

Are you confusing asylum seekers with refugees?

I don't have any issue with people having a negative opinion, but just don't make yourself look stupid in the process. Anyone who adds "funded by the government" constantly to describe things or ideologies they don't like are generally not that clever. Whether it's motability cars, asylum seekers, weight loss injections, methadone etc etc, there's just no need. Just say why you don't like it, most people know that there is some sort of government subsidy (perhaps not the case in motability scheme), there's no need to say it for dramatic affect.

General Gordon died in Khartoum in 1885
Sudan declared independence on January 1, 1956, so just how old are you ?!

Or maybe you are conflating asylum seekers with refugees (as do many)? Asylum seekers are not recourse to UC or other 'traditional' benefits. Where are you seeing all of these people that gives you insight into their immigration and financial status?

Exactly, these are not funded by any one government, they are funded whether Conservatives or Labour are in power.

Do you work in the system? I hope not!

Government documents prove that you don’t know what you are doing and are not following legal requirements or you are confusing asylum seekers with refugees.

Very different status.

Yes, I worked with Syrian refugee families who studied hard to learn English, so that they could be part of the community. Their children learned quicker but were great at helping out.

Learning the local language is so helpful to community cohesion and relationship building @Thecows

Much better than the very English community my parents lived in in Spain where very few learned to speak Spanish, my DM (but not my DF) being an exception.

Oh for heavens sake! Immigration is destroying many communities here. One Syrian family does not make up the whole of the asylum system.

Terrace houses being turned into HMOs has destroyed my home town within a few short years. Every two / three terrace gets snapped up and turned into a minium 5 bed HMO. Changes everything about the town. The only good news OP that if you sold up, you have a developer bidding war

This is happening where I am , the terraced houses used to be bought by first time buyers and then when the market crashed BTL landlords swooped in and bulk bought houses turned them into HMOs (many unoffical, think 10 people crammed into a two up two down). Despite it being a selective licensing area the council do nothing about it, they just pocket the fees. We also have around 50% of the countywide homelessness charity's supported accommodation, so the whole area is bascially a dumping ground. lots of poverty, crime, rubbish, street drinking and anti social behaviour

It seems impossible to debunk this myth that asylum seekers get benefits. I've pointed it out on many threads and so have several others. People seem not to want to believe it, or they prefer to perpetuate the misinformation.

My partner worked for DWP and always debunks this. Illegal immigrants cannot claim benefits and they cannot legitimately work here either as they do not have the right to work. Illegal immigrants on benefits is a myth. But like Trump "truths", if it's repeated enough times it becomes fact.

Brava. I would add that in my area charities also fund English classes for asylum seekers and refugees.

OP! Do you report illegal activity?

Delieveroo etc should be thoroughly investigated, Employing people without the legal right to work is punishable by fines of I think £10k per person, and everyone knows they are doing it so why is not cracked down on?
