AIBU for saying my DH needs to man tf up

DH has just gotten a very good job promotion, and I am very proud of him. Obviously. Lovely salary, lovely title, everyone congratulating him etc. BUT. He is destined for an even greater promotion (CEO level). Don't ask how I know this.
The problem is DH keeps saying he doesn't want to "get involved in office politics" and that “nature will take its course” I've tried encouraging him. I've said, hypothetically, if there was a person standing between my DH and the CEO position, then perhaps one might consider... removing the obstacle. metaphorically I mean
Also, I may have suggested that DH invite the current CEO round for a nice little dinner.Purely hospitality, obviously. DH said he was worried about the consequences, particularly the whole "divine judgement, eternal damnation" side of things. Blah blah blah
Honestly, he's overthinking it.
I am NOT saying DH should kill anyone. Obviously not... at least not with his eyes open. I'm only saying that hypothetically, if one wanted to rise to the very top, one might need to show a little more ambition
AIBU to think DH needs to man up and seize his opportunity?
FWIW, I’ve already laid out the plan, and the metaphorical dagger is just waiting to be used.

Although maybe we should lighten up a bit with a play where most people don’t end up dead! OP might like to escape to an island holiday after the stress she’s been under!

Brush up your Shakespeare, start quoting him now. Brush up your Shakespeare and the CEO you will wow. Just declaim a few lines from Othella, and they’ll think he’s one hell of a fella, If because of your heat he gets huffy simply play on and Lay on Macduffy. Brush up your Shakespeare and they’ll all kowtow. (Apologies to Cole Porter)😂

🤦🏽‍♀️ I clearly missed that this was a playful post.

O Shame! Where is thy blush?
[Hamlet]

In context, your post was priceless.

LOL. I am rather pleased my DH has NOT gone down the consulting with psychics and bumping off the competition, though. I’d rather he was alive than a ‘king’.

Am thinking it is a great plot to rework in a contemporary crime novel though… I also want to see the modern reimagining of The Tempest suggested above. That’s a movie I’d go to see!

In fairness, the ‘psychics’ ambushed him as he walked off the battlefield, having just killed the head rebel in hand-to-hand combat and stuck his head on the battlements, so it’s hardly like a middle-manager DH going to see Madame Zelda in her caravan on the pier on his way home and being infected with the desire to be CEO.😃

I vote King Lear next! I’ve always thought The Tempest was a bit of a storm in a teacup. (Sorry, DD!)

King Lear is pure AIBU.

AIBU to be a bit put out that my elderly, increasingly dementia-prone father decided to portion out the family inheritance over dinner in a weird flattery competition as to who could say the nicest things about him? Regan and I won, obviously, because PA prim-faced Cordelia wouldn’t play. Though maybe she was right because when I said Dad was always welcome at my house, he promptly moved in with 100 drunk friends and went all rude and demanding. Then he got pissy when I asserted my boundaries, and Regan locked him out, and now the neighbours say he’s wandering around on the heath in a thunderstorm in his pyjamas screaming at bushes? What do I do? AITA for asking him to leave? Why couldn’t Regan have suffered a bit?

In jest, there is truth.

MagicMagpie · 24/09/2026 18:38

(Regan) To be fair, Sis, I am suffering, thank you very much! Dad came straight from your castle to mine, still with his hundred drunken mates. Then he went into a major strop when I very reasonably suggested (ok, ordered) that he cut down his followers to 50 and then, actually, zero. He said the most AWFUL things to me - wished that Nature would convey sterility and dry up my organs of increase so there would never spring a babe to honour me! Did you ever hear the like? AND he knows the Duke and I are TTC!! Some potential grandad, eh? I’ve never been more delighted to see someone storm out into a storm, I tell you!

That would not be a tragedy.

Love it - I did King Lear for A Level and saw Anthony Hopkins play the title role at the RSC. Would be a hard act to follow…

That might make a really funny film, though? Ryan Reynolds as the middle manager trying to appease an ambitious fiancée, Glenn Close as Madame Zelda casting a charm over him…

I wouldnt if you live in a forested area.

Birnam Wood will come to Dunsinane.

I'm busy, I'll just send a ghostly apparition.

MagicMagpie · 25/09/2026 11:03

Well, I think it’s a bit rude to ghost them after our recent close association but each to their own.

Yes, since Lady Macbeth of Mitensk! Jo Nesbo has one where the Macbeth character is an addict cop and his partner is a manipulative casino owner getting senior police assassinated to get him promoted. House of Cards? Claire Underwood is pure Lady M. Whichever season of Fargo it is where the beautician hits the mobsters with her car and manipulates her husband into a cover-up and mafia turf war? The novel/film adaptation A Simple Plan where three guys find millions after a plane crash and Bridget Fonda manipulates her mild-mannered husband into covering it up by killing anyone else who knows so they can keep all the money?

DangerousLesions · 25/09/2026 11:53

Damnloginpopup · 23/09/2026 20:47

Nah. It's common parlance here in the real world. Damned be him that first cries 'Hold, enough".

I had to look that up. Still not sure of the association. Macbeth gains courage and prepares for battle? But I don't think Shakespeare wrote: "Man up Macbeth or ye shall be smitten down".
