Husband has never heard of HRT. I find it odd...

So I'm a woman of that kind of age and I've got a gynaecologist appointment next week and the doctor has brought up HRT before.

When I was talking to my husband over the weekend he had never heard of it 🙄Is his head really in the sand? I'm not expecting him to be fully read up on it but honestly his reaction was a bit like I'd just told him I was thinking of putting after sun on my sunburn 😅

He really had no idea and I'm not sure he gets hormonal changes when women go through the menopause. It's not that he is dim either, university educated, software engineer.

Not really an AIBU but isn't it strange he knows nothing about it?

Is is 20years younger or something?

Why would he? It's never been something that's been an issue for him.
How many women really know about the prostate, let's face it!
Also, men have a much better attitude to health than most females (yes, I'm female), as in "If I'm not ill, why should I bother about health stuff?"..... we should all be more like this, tbh.

Men are notoriously rubbish about seeking medical help when ill

No one seems at all worried about what the OP puts on her sunburn... What's wrong with aftersun? Did I miss something @NoKnit ?

I'm glad I'm not the only one!

"his reaction was a bit like I'd just told him I was thinking of putting after sun on my sunburn 😅"

I wouldn't have reacted to that at all. Isn't that what everyone does? Your husband reacted with complete indifference? What was he supposed to do?

Minasama · 21/09/2026 21:18

I don’t think most men are very interested in the menopause or in women’s hormones, so these are the types of things they’d turn over if it came on the tv or scroll past.

only if you had bad symptoms that were affecting you. I think it's the "in-thing" to moan about now because Gen X (like me) are going through it now while struggling to work and raise kids. (who doesn't like a good moan though)

It’s not “moaning” FGS. Why would you say that?!

He doesn’t remember his mum going through menopause?

I’m a bit surprised it hasnt come up in conversation before now if you have got as far as making an appointment. He must have noticed your symptoms ?

I mean, I don't remember my mum going through menopause. It's not something that was ever talked about then or since.

I find it odd that OP has never raised it with DH. If she hasn't why would anyone else have or he have felt the need to investigate?

My mum flew through menopause. I only knew because she told me. She may have had symptoms, I've no idea but if she did she certainly just got on with it.

No HRT.

Tbf my dh didn't know I'd gone through menopause until I stopped him using condoms. He was a bit surprised but it wasn't something that was a big enough deal to mention. I had no hot flushes etc and my periods just stopped.

He does however know what hrt is and he knows I started using it when I developed joint pain and he's jealous there is no commonly offered male alternative.

Sahara123 · 22/09/2026 14:26

I’m not sure I know a huge amount about as I went through the menopause without knowing, thank you Mirena coil ! And my husband certainly doesn’t. I would’ve just gone to the GP on a need to know basis.

SmashThePatriarchy · 22/09/2026 14:28

I don’t think lots of men would know what it is. Equally, younger women. They may have heard people say HRT but don’t necessarily know what it is. I can’t blame them really. Unless something happens to you you’re less likely to take note.

MyPeachScroller · 22/09/2026 18:22

No, not actually all that odd. A lot of men think a woman only needs one tampon her whole period. Others think you have to take a tampon out to pee (2 holes vs 3). Others think we can control when we bleed, i.e., stop it if we want. Some think we only bleed for a day. The level of ignorance is astounding. So not surprised there's no recognition of menopause or HRT.
BTW, good for you about HRT (or Menopause Support Therapy, MST, as it's called now). It's beneficial for our bones, our heart, our brain, and our skin. It's important not to delay too long. Usually one overlaps while going through menopause to post-menopause (menopause is defined as 12 consecutive months of no period, average age is 51). I won't ever stop using it.

AlwaysExtraHot · 22/09/2026 18:25

I'd find that astounding.
Apart from anything else, there have been years and years of cultural comment/jokes etc about women needing HRT, going on HRT, not going on HRT...
And of course an awful lot of news coverage of it. No, not everyone follows the news diligently, but things like the breast cancer/HRT link have been getting front-page/first item billing for ages.
You really would have to have a paper bag over your head to have no inkling about it.

That made me realise that I don't remember anything about my mum going through the menopause. Maybe I had left home when it all happened. She certainly never mentioned anything.

Why is it odd that he hasn’t heard of it? I’m a woman and I had never heard about HRT either. I’d never even heard anyone mention it before.

Do you know about every health issue or treatment that is specific to men? Probably not, unless you had a reason to learn about them.

Why would your husband know about HRT unless he had a personal reason to come across it or someone close to him had discussed it? It’s not something everyone is automatically aware of.

When did you first hear of HRT @Loverurarliving01 ?

First time I heard about HRT was in this post.

After looking into it, I’m even more surprised that people expect everyone to know about it. I’m 38, so menopause is still a few good years away for me, and I don’t really understand how I would have heard of a “treatment” for it if it wasn’t relevant to me yet.

I don’t really watch TV or use social media much, so I’m guessing it was a big topic?

Do you not read a newspaper or listen to the radio? It’s been a big topic for years. Nothing to do with social media.

Of all the things I have read on Mumsnet - this post is the oddest

Haha ok.

Well not really ok - it would indicate fairly extreme isolation

i am not on social media in any form.

The idea of having no idea and
not having even heard about HRT as a woman of 38 (on Mumsnet no less!) in 2026 - well that indicates very isolated to me.

Needless to say you will say otherwise
