I’m a bit surprised it hasnt come up in conversation before now if you have got as far as making an appointment. He must have noticed your symptoms ?

I don’t think my husband would know what this is. Or my dad to be honest. My dad’s mum died when he was young, my mum had a hysterectomy around 40 (and my parents had split by then), my husband’s mum had early menopause due to chemotherapy. I don’t think he would know what it is. But he’d be open to learning and listening!

Honestly though it’s nothing to do with him so if my doctor and I thought it was for the best, that’s the only conversation that needs to happen. My husband wouldn’t have an opinion or a vote anyway.

I’m 100% sure my Dad wouldn’t know either. He is in his 60’s, doubtful my mum would have gone into much detail with him either.

It's the first time this has directly impacted his life so not surprising he doesn't know anything about it.

A lot of men are stupendously ignorant about anatomy and health. They know very little about their own, and nothing at all about women's. It seems to pass them by. I realised that general health information had been part of my upbringing, but not my brothers' or my husbands' - another piece of women's invisible burden, perhaps. Many men seem to feel it's weak or shameful to know how bodies work

I now explain things clearly whenever the knowledge gap becomes apparent. And I don't make sure it's in private or lower my voice, either!

I am a 51 year old menopausal woman and I have heard of HRT but I have never needed it as far as I know so literally I have heard of it as much as I have heard of some medications but never needed them.
Would you expect him to have heard of every medication out there?
I actually have no clue what the symptoms are that mean some woman use it.

My DH had never heard of it either. I find it utterly bizarre as it is referenced frequently in main stream news and tv shows.

Do most women know what medication is used for prostate cancer?
I would be horrified if a male had never heard of the menopause but not knowing the name of a medication they have never needed in their life I don't think is odd.

I would imagine he must have heard it said in passing on TV or something but as it isn't something he'd ever need to use it probably just didn't stick in his brain. It's not really necessary for anyone to know about it unless they're planning on taking it. And it would be a private discussion between a woman and a health professional. It's not likely to be coming through on the algorithms on many blokes' phones.

There is so much out there about menopause now, I don’t think there’s much excuse to not be aware.

It’s a shame your doctor hasn’t been more switched on @needmorelego.HRT can prevent osteoporosis among other conditions that women have just put up with until now.

yeah but they don't go on about it on the news. they do about HRT.

I don't remember my mum going through menopause and I know now as an adult she has never been on hrt and other than the occasional hot flush, menopause largely passed her by without note

only if you had bad symptoms that were affecting you. I think it's the "in-thing" to moan about now because Gen X (like me) are going through it now while struggling to work and raise kids. (who doesn't like a good moan though)

I have never used it because as far as I know I have never needed it.

I’m a bit surprised about some of the responses, my Dad is in his 80s, my DH is in his 50s and my DS is in his late teens.

They all know what HRT is, because they have all lived with at least one woman who has gone through menopause and who has friends going through menopause.

Perhaps I overestimate how much people discuss things in their families?

Even before I hit perimenopause I had friends going through and my DH had friends whose wives were going through it so the subject was discussed.

I was shocked by this, but then asked DH. He was like "huh? what's that??"

But then he found out it stands for "Hormone Replacement Therapy", and he's like oooooh right.

So what if you didn't use the abbreviation? 😆
