Am I being unreasonable to expect doors to be closed.

If someone leaves a room is it reasonable to expect that they close the door behind them, if the door was previously closed?

Yes, YABU. Get up and close it if you want it shut.

No, YANBU. What kind of an animal leaves the door open?

YANBU

Like the Countryside Code and gates

If it was open, leave it open

If it was closed, close it

Depends a bit. If it’s someone’s bedroom and they’re relaxing in there with the door closed, I go in and chat then leave, I’d close the door to maintain their privacy.

If I’m walking through the house going in and out of rooms, and there’s no particular need for doors to be closed or open (eg nobody is trying to sleep in there or shut out noise from a diff bit of the house, or keep cooking smells in) I wouldn’t mind at all whether the door was closed or open. So I wouldn’t think “oh must leave it how I found it”. It’s fine for some doors to just be open sometimes.

FancyKitten · 20/09/2026 00:16

What I hate is when someone (DH) leaves a door ajar / off the latch. 90% closed. No! Just close it properly! Or leave it fully open.

Topseyt123 · 20/09/2026 00:21

It depends on a number of things. If it is someone's bedroom then I would expect them to close the door for their own privacy, and they do. Obviously an external door must be closed for security but internal ones can have more flexibility.

I don't expect doors to places like the living room to be closed, as they are communal and open to us all.

I don't insist on absolutely every door being closed. Why would I? I like air and light to flow throughout the house and some open doors help.

My parents used to be pedantic about all doors needing to be shut just because they were there. Why?

PollyBell · 20/09/2026 00:25

Well it depends what door are we speaking of.

BibbityBoppityTwo · 20/09/2026 00:25

Depends on the room, what is going on in it and if the door is typically closed. Some of the living areas in our home have door permanently open because they act as thoroughfares to other parts of the house. But if it’s someone’s bedroom and they were in there with the door shut, or it’s winter and you’re trying to keep the heat in, then yes you should shut the door behind you.

Friendlygingercat · 20/09/2026 00:26

I live alone. I try to keep the doors closed in chilly weather to keep the warmth in the room I'm heating. It really annoys me if someone visiting leaves doors open. I always tell them to close the door behind them. It seems basic good manners. I keep my external doors closed and locked.

Anonomoso · 20/09/2026 00:30

My 2 year old DGC always closes doors behind them, have no idea where they picked that up from.

likelysuspect · 20/09/2026 00:31

I suppose some people wouldnt even notice if they came through an open door or non open door. My OH wouldnt.

YoghurtPond · 20/09/2026 00:40

Unless one of us is working in our office, asleep in bed, or in the loo or the bath, all internal doors stay open here. I grew up in a tiny, overcrowded, badly planned house where all the rooms led out of one another so that to get from my bedroom to the only bathroom involved walking through both living room and kitchen and opening and closing five doors. Here I want to be able to move around freely.

Ace56 · 20/09/2026 00:45

Agree with pp. Doors to communal rooms stay open in my house - it’d only be an office, bedroom or bathroom where the door would be closed. Can’t bear those stuffy houses where everyone sits in different rooms with doors closed - just seems so antisocial and necessary (especially at this time of year when there’s no need to keep heat in!)

CrazyMidget · 20/09/2026 01:53

When I was a teenager, I’d be in the room with my door shut or pulled to. My mum would come in for whatever reason, and then when she left, she’d vaguely and half-heartedly give the door a weak pull behind her so that it remained half-open, or sometimes flop back to fully open. Every single time. Because it happened a lot, it drove me mad. It does sound like a small thing, but it’s annoying to have to KEEP getting up after someone to put the door back how it was. So yes, you should place the door how you found it, imo, especially if it’s someone’s bedroom.

MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNS · 20/09/2026 01:58

Summer it doesn't matter to us as flat can be toasty.
Winter definitely to keep living room cosy at 21 degrees.

Keyboardsrus · 20/09/2026 02:07

Agree with PP’s it varies depending on which room and time of day, due to old house layout we don’t have a door to our kitchen so it’s always open. Bedroom doors are usually open to circulate air, we like a lot of fresh air but are closed when someone is in the room. Living room open all day but closed when DH goes up to bed, he goes up earlier than I do, so the noise from the TV doesn’t disturb him. He works from home I go out to work so office door open all day when he’s on his own, when I’m home as well office door is shut. So an absolute mixture of door open / door closed in our house.

I'd stay off the wine if I were you

Passaggressfedup · 20/09/2026 09:01

My OH wants e wry si gle door closed. I am the exact opposite, it makes me feel claustrophobic. My instinct is to keep them open so to close them, I have to have a conscious thought to do it.

He even stresses if I leave a door open whilst I go to get something in the kitchen, arrrrrrrr.

TeenToTwenties · 20/09/2026 09:03

Winter keep living room door shut.
Summer keep it open.
DD just gets the hang of it and then we swap!

Gwenhwyfar · 20/09/2026 09:04

YABU to expect people to remember how it was.
At the office I always have to ask what the person wants because I don't remember if it was closed, open or something in between when I come in.

I do hate it when people leave doors to the outside open in the winter or any room where you have heating and letting the heating out of the room.

ImogenBrocklehurst · 20/09/2026 14:39

Living room. Two doors, one into the hall, one into the dining room. Just us here.

if we’re sitting in the living room and my husband goes out he leaves the door wide open. When he comes back he gets arsey if I ask for it to be closed. It’s become a (frankly pointless) bone of contention, and I wondered if others felt the same?

I would agree, but my cat thinks you're completely unreasonable hence why all my carpets are knackered.

if we’re siting in the living room the door is always closed, so it’s not too taxing to remember. It’s not claustrophobic, it’s a big room, so that’s not an issue. I just struggle to understand why he’s such a grump about it.

Mine too - if I leave the door ajar he bursts through like Joan Collins in Dynasty and we have to get up anyway. I find a rope round each door handle keeps it mostly closed, and a doorstop a couple of inches behind to allow a cat sized opening when they want to shimmy through.

Doors standing open make me restless. It’s not rational, I’m aware of that, but I feel unsettled. They don’t have to be shut tight, just pulled over.
