To start picking out outfits for the week on a Sunday?

It’s heading into autumn and winter and the dark mornings have really crept up on me. Every year I struggle really badly with seasonal depression. I’ve seen my doctor about it and the outcome seems to just be a shrug of the shoulders and a “sorry there’s not much we can do”. I’ve had bloods done, I eat well and maintain a good exercise routine, but just struggle.

One thing I think will help is laying out clothes for the week so each morning is as easy as possible. I really struggle to get myself out of bed, so reducing friction should help.

My partner is dead against it. We have a big space in our bedroom where I’d like to put a small clothing rail to do this. AIBU? He thinks it’ll be too cluttered and tacky. I think it would be worth it to help me in the mornings.

Because our clothes are in the wardrobes and drawers, taking a full outfit out and putting it somewhere else seems like it’s adding time rather than saving it 🤷‍♀️

For me, it’s not that it saves time exactly, it’s more that it saves thinking in the morning, because I have already decided that this and that go together, are fine for the weather and whatever I’m doing that day, so I just pick up one hanger or combination of hangers and you bypass all the ‘hmm where’s that top? Shall I wear this?’ that I just don’t want to do in the morning. Eg underwear, trousers, top, jumper are all there, pre decided. I don’t do it if I’m at home all day but if I’m going out I do. Same as I get my sandwiches done the day before, it just saves those mini decisions that I don’t want to do as soon as I wake up.

As I said it’s just not something that is a problem for me.
I never make sandwiches the night before either which I know most people find easier, it feels like more faff to do in the evening than it does in the morning.
It’s strange really as I am not a morning person at all.

I pick out outfits for the week but keep them in the wardrobe - I loop a pair of pants round the top of the bunch of hangers for each day. The night before, I get one set out of the wardrobe and hang it off a cupboard handle on the landing (as I get up earlier than dp so get dressed in the bathroom). Maybe try just grouping clothes into outfits where they’re hanging first, before buying a rail?

Can you make plans to leave the UK? Being unhappy for half the year is no way to live.

Blimey! I thought I was being controversial suggesting packing cubes!

Okay you bloke is a selfish prick, and feel free to show him this message.

When you love someone you want them to have a nice life and you are always there to help make your partner’s life easier.

He does not seem to want you to have a nice life and he is not interested in making your life easier, does he even love you?

We might have sympathy for him if you were asking for something totally unreasonable; but a small unobtrusive clothes rail in a room you only sleep in is perfectly reasonable.

His threatening to sleep elsewhere is childish and controlling. He’s trying to get his own way by punishing you. Frankly, are you sure it’s SAD leaving you depressed and not your husband? He sounds exhausting.

I absolutely wouldn't want a clothing rail in my bedroom.

Can you not just hang your chosen outfits in your wardrobe at the front end of the rail?

Student/holiday let vibes

A mess, that would drive me to distraction, I cant function when the house is a mess and things are all over the place and thats what that looks like.

You still havent really answered how its not possible for you to put the clothes you need on a section of your 'cupboard with a rail, aka wardrobe' which is your weekly clothes

I personally, although I have tons of clothes, have very few work things. I have 3 piars of black trousers and 5 tops, they are my work things, I keep them in separate drawers, I dont wear them out of work and dont wear 'non work things' in work. So each morning, Im just grabbing a top and one of the trousers which I wear through the week.

I have, multiple times.

He’s still not speaking to me. Utterly pathetic.

A rather nuclear option there.

Perhaps work with the GP around treatment might be a bit more realistic.

Keepthefaith99 · 21/09/2026 21:46

I do this every Sunday!
Plan my outfits, shoes and jewellery, all hanging on a rail (albeit it the spare room) but it doesn’t matter where it is if it protects your mental health during tougher months. Doing this makes me feel so much more put together and it’s one less thing to think about at 6am!
Hopefully you can try it OP and your partner may see the improvement to your wellbeing with one thing taken off the load.

I have SAD. Please get some Luminette light glasses and use them before 10am every day. Absolute game changer. You can get them on Amazon.

NewNameW · 24/09/2026 19:15

After seeing the rail vs ceiling height I've changed my mind, you could absolutely find something to fit that space that isn't all on show. Idk what I expected and I say go for it but yeah it's all a bit randomly placed with what looks like mostly jackets. And the wall looks big and high enough for an actual wardrobe

blubberball · 24/09/2026 19:39

A bit off topic, but I use a daylight therapy lamp, as I also struggle on dark mornings

Whatawickedgametochoose · 24/09/2026 19:39

Mine moaned about similar, I bought a beautiful inexpensive rail with little leaves on the side to hang my cardigans on. I wouldn’t mind but he simply uses the floor as his floordrobe and is amazed since I became disabled that clothes don’t simply pick themselves up from there and jump into the linen basket anymore or put themselves away when clean. He has since got used to said rail and in fact didn’t comment when Dd1 bought a 2 pack of over door ones and gave me one to use. I hope he stops sulking soon, meanwhile enjoy your rail, I hope it helps your mental health and treat it as peace and ignore it, he’s being an arse
