To start picking out outfits for the week on a Sunday?

It’s heading into autumn and winter and the dark mornings have really crept up on me. Every year I struggle really badly with seasonal depression. I’ve seen my doctor about it and the outcome seems to just be a shrug of the shoulders and a “sorry there’s not much we can do”. I’ve had bloods done, I eat well and maintain a good exercise routine, but just struggle.

One thing I think will help is laying out clothes for the week so each morning is as easy as possible. I really struggle to get myself out of bed, so reducing friction should help.

My partner is dead against it. We have a big space in our bedroom where I’d like to put a small clothing rail to do this. AIBU? He thinks it’ll be too cluttered and tacky. I think it would be worth it to help me in the mornings.

It sounds like a really practical helpful idea OP (I'm now considering trialling this myself this week) and I'm sorry your partner isn't being more supportive about it.

Would this kind of thing be a good compromise?share.google/sZlF6wlv3PM4aqpPZ

Or is there another room that could accommodate the rail, so it's not in your bedroom?

Rubbish. I imagine most people on here would be supportive of the OH and calling the OP unreasonable for getting worked up over a clothes rail, and rightly so…

They absolutely wouldnt and you know it!!!

WherestheTrombolese · 20/09/2026 14:54

I can see why he wouldn’t like the look of it and I’ve never understood the whole laying out clothes thing.
However there’s probably loads of things I find difficult that other people just crack on with. If you are struggling and think it would help then he should at least be willing to help find a compromise.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 20/09/2026 15:13

I think its a great idea OP, I'm planning to do the same although I'm going to pick it out the night before, as part of a longer 'no phone' bedtime routine.

Something else you could consider is looking at some videos on capsule wardrobes, the intention is that you have say 10 pieces that all go with each other, so you can pull any combination out and it will work. Would then allow for changes of weather etc when you get to Thursday and Friday.

Also re the lamp, I stick mine on in the kitchen when I'm making breakfast as its the first thing I do in the morning, really helps me feel more alive by the time the sun actually comes up.

How can you not understand saving time in the mornings by having your clothes all ready for the week and easily accessible

It's literally that simple 😁

OhBettyCalmDown · 20/09/2026 15:53

Can’t you come to some other compromise OP? I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want to sort your clothes for the week if it helps your MH but it’s his house too. Can’t you find some clothes storage system that suits both of your needs?

For what it’s worth, a rail like the one you suggested would stress me out too. I would be happy to find an enclosed piece of furniture though or find space for it in a different room.

TheBossOfMe · 19/09/2026 10:52

Can you not just hang the outfits in your wardrobe? The right hand side of my hanging rail in my wardrobe is for exactly this.

I did this when I worked full time out of the home - was very helpful and didn’t look messy!

My DD has a 2 hour commute to 6th form and she had over-door hooks on the outside of her wardrobe door for the same purpose.

OldWallpaper · 20/09/2026 16:33

I put all my clothes and shower stuff out the night before and get my lunch ready too. Saves time and stress…

We don’t have a wardrobe, we have a cupboard with a clothing rail in it

Are things on hangers then? Can you take a top on a hanger, a skirt or pair of trousers on a hanger, put a pair of pants, bra, tights, leggings, whatever draped over both hangers? So they’re one unit? Then repeat that another four times, put them all back where they were and that’s your outfits sorted? Or a coat hook on the back of the cupboard door for the five outfits? Or back of the bathroom door? I admit I also don’t quite see where the issue is. Maybe we need a photo?

Yeah i don't get this. Surely a "cupboard with a clothes rail in" is a wardrobe?

I wouldn't want a random rack in my bedroom either tbh, and if I read OPs posts correctly, she basically wears the same stuff all winter till march so I don't see why it needs so much pre planning. Just keep the winter stuff you'll inevitably choose at one side of the wardrobe cupboard with a clothes rail in

wholikesliving · 20/09/2026 16:36

I’ve got the rail, I picked it up today. He’s in an absolute strop about it and threatening to not sleep in the bed!

@wholikesliving 👏👏👏
you sure he isn’t a huge part of the MH part?

Purplecatshopaholic · 20/09/2026 16:38

I do this and it makes a huge difference. Everything organised for the week on a rail, with shoes, bags etc too. I do have a separate dressing room though so my partner doesn’t have to look at it. But really if it’s to protect your MH, your partner should be supportive. At least try it and see if it works/if he objects (for any valid reason).

Wingwalk · 20/09/2026 16:38

Now I'm even more confused. That's not five full outfits for the week all ready to put on, it's just a selection of bits of clothing you'll still have to pick from and match. It looks like you've just pulled some winter stuff out of your existing wardrobe?
And it does block the corner of the room so makes it look a bit messy. Can you put your rack in another room?

Wingwalk · 20/09/2026 16:41

What about his mental health? I appreciate that OP is disproportionately affected by winter and finds simple tasks like taking clothes out of a wardrobe too much. That's fair enough, we're all different. Her DH is disproportionately affected by having a messy bedroom and finds a simple rack in the room to be stressful/unrelaxing. Why is she right and he wrong? Surely they both have to compromise given their idiosyncratic feelings about stuff?

OhBettyCalmDown · 20/09/2026 16:49

Sorry Op, I’m with DH here. Now you’ve put the photos up, having that in my room would really annoy me. You say you have a cupboard with a rail in so I don’t see why you couldn’t do what you’ve done there with your exiting rail. You could've used something to act as a divide in your existing rail so that everything on one side is separated for the week. I think both of your opinions/ difficulties are valid here so you should’ve tried harder to find a solution that suits you both.

Can you turn it so that it is along one of the walls. I like it but it does look a bit odd across the corner

Sidebeforeself · 20/09/2026 16:53

Well he will be in an absolute strop if you ignored his concerns. You should have both worked together to find a compromise.

latetothefisting · 20/09/2026 17:05

The photo doesn't seem to support your point that your room is of such odd proportions a small wardrobe wouldn't fit. Looks like there would be more than adequate space along either of those walls.

I'm on your partners side. You're both being inflexible but you're the one seeking to disrupt the status quo so you should be the one trying to find a compromise. Not "Fuck you I've decided this will help me so I'm getting it."

I don’t understand how that random assortment of clothes (which looks like every random assortment of clothes everyone has in their wardrobe) is any different? Where are the outfits?

That’s like saying you’ve made your sandwiches for tomorrow but what you’ve actually done is put the bread, the butter, and the cheese on a separate shelf in the fridge 🤔.

I was Team Compromise before but now I’m Team DH.

MadKittenWoman · 20/09/2026 17:39

I have something like this from Amazon. You can easily get a week’s worth of outfits on it, especially if you use cascading hangers, hooks and other organisers. It takes up very little space. Your partner needs to get a grip. Flowers.

MadKittenWoman · 20/09/2026 17:43

Sorry, just seen your solution. That does look a bit unhinged.

wholikesliving · 19/09/2026 10:53

For full disclosure it’s this one from Argos, 152cm tall and 99cm along, so not huge.

He thinks it’ll make the bedroom cluttered and too busy for him to relax properly - we don’t really spend a lot of time in the bedroom so I’m not really sure why he’s pushing back so much

I think it looks rather nice.

puppysleepdeprivation · 20/09/2026 17:58

Well, I hope the rail is worth the problems it's already causing in your marriage!

(And I also don't see how a small wardrobe wouldn't have fit there, or possibly a curtain to hide the rail, so I'm thinking either someone is stubborn and wants things all her own way or this is just a wind-up.)

Because our clothes are in the wardrobes and drawers, taking a full outfit out and putting it somewhere else seems like it’s adding time rather than saving it 🤷‍♀️

Student/holiday let vibes

A mess, that would drive me to distraction, I cant function when the house is a mess and things are all over the place and thats what that looks like.

You still havent really answered how its not possible for you to put the clothes you need on a section of your 'cupboard with a rail, aka wardrobe' which is your weekly clothes

I personally, although I have tons of clothes, have very few work things. I have 3 piars of black trousers and 5 tops, they are my work things, I keep them in separate drawers, I dont wear them out of work and dont wear 'non work things' in work. So each morning, Im just grabbing a top and one of the trousers which I wear through the week.
