I seriously doubt he thought this let alone said this.

I think this has more to do with Spencer having a book out and his personal vendetta against his ex brother in law. He seems intent to bring down Charles and Camilla (probably with a bit of help from Harry and Meghan).

I find if incredibly hard to believe he was “distraught” 🙄. Shocked and upset and concerned how it would play out for him and C, but distraught? Don’t buy that at all.

Let's say CS believes it is true.

1. We're talking a conversation 30 years ago. Both of them were in shock, traumatised - how likely is it that a conversation has been remembered accurately? Having been through a traumatic time relatively recently, I had a couple of conversations that I noted down at the time for evidence. My actual memory, and I can hear the person's inflection in their voice in my head if I think about it, is not correct. If I didn't have those notes then I could swear they said different, making it a totally different meaning.
2. We don't get the context: "The public is fickle, they'll move on and forget her soon enough unless we work to keep her memory alive", for example. Plenty more similar comments that are close enough for a 30 year old conversation to remember falsely.
3. Why now? Why didn't he use that in the eulogy when he was having a go at the RF? Would have been a perfect line leading up to "We won't forget her..." Oh yes, he has a book to sell.
4. He's had 30 years of being able to mention it. He wouldn't have been questioned at all if he'd said it at the time. He's not even managed to persuade a sister or friend to back him up that he mentioned it at the time.
5. KC was the one who wanted a state funeral for her, went to pick up her body with her sisters (note, her sisters not CS) and generally looked shattered at the time. That was reported at the time. If he'd wanted everyone to forget quickly, he'd have fought against it, stated the family wanted a private funeral and/or kept away.

I bet if KC wanted to he could give away some pretty unpleasant things CS has said privately over the years. After all we know publicly that CS has been through how many wives, four is it now? And we also know he hasn't exactly treated them well... I suppose you could say that he's more experienced in marriage than KC...

It's funny how many people are desperate to make sure all the negative things from the book are discussed rather than the book in general. Highlighting in AIBU things they want people to think about the RF. And either joined especially to do this, or name changed so people can't connect up their history and see what they've put in the past one might suspect they have an agenda

Surely as this is a book. It should be discussed in "What we're reading"? or the Royal Family topic.

If I had to choose between the truthfulness of the two Charles, I’d pick King over Earl. I remember Diana’s death very clearly and Prince Charles was very obviously distressed. He brought Diana home with the royal standard on her coffin and insisted she got a full royal funeral, even though protocol dictated otherwise.

The palace makes “recollections may vary” type statements to close off discussion. Otherwise they’d get into a tabloid back and forth of “you said this”, “oh no we didn’t”, “oh yes you did”, like a Punch & Judy show.

Issuing a lukewarm response is basically the equivalent message of “you do you, we’re not engaging further than this statement, now bore off”.

Anyone who treats those non-committal statements as some sort of admission clearly don’t have the brains for any sort of strategic communications.

I don't see any evidence of sycophantic royalists on here, in fact many seem to believe that KC may well have said it, or words similar. They just think that it should have remained a private family matter, KC may have been in the wrong to say it, but CS is the one using the tragic events of his own sister's death it to cash-in in the most crass way possible. You're reacting exactly how CS wants you to by giving this total non-story oxygen and piling-on KC. I can just hear CS rubbing his grubby little hands together.

I'm certainly not going to help one of them make money off this rubbish, i think he shoild have his title removed, if he hates the head of the royal family so much surely he wouldn't want to be under his hierarchy?

Why would KC have been angry, he must have been distraught, PD was the mother of his children. They were divorced but back on good terms.

So Spencer is now being sued for slandering/defamation of peirs Morgan.
Spencer claimed that he was responsible for posting pictures of Diana that lead to the paparazzi hounding her to here death when he was editor of the mirror.
Only at the time that the photos in question were published not only was Morgan not the editor of the mirror but he didn't even work for the paper he was a columnist at its rival the sun.
Given that we can now prove that Spencer has lied in his book do you still believe what he said about the king?

Well, that’s the deal when you have a hereditary monarchy — you don’t get to select for niceness/non-Nazi sympathies/ability not to shag around when married/preparedness to pay off a formerly trafficked woman accusing your son of wrongdoing. You just get who you get.

If you want a HoS you actually approve of, dismantle the monarchy and replace it with an elected ceremonial HoS you can replace at four-year intervals.

I don't know if it's true or not but I don't find it unbelievable. The war of the Waleses was toxic and whilst Diana was far from perfect her husband and Camilla treated her abysmally.
