Nobody knows (except for him and Earl Spencer) if he did say that. Maybe he didn’t mean it in that way, maybe he did mean it cruelly, maybe he was frustrated and it sounded harsher than intended. Or maybe he is vindictive and was glad his popular ex wife was dead. Or maybe Earl Spencer is a grifter trying to sell books.

I don't believe that was exactly what was said

I do believe there was an argument and King Charles commented something about the outpouring grief the public were displaying would end soon and everyone (meaning the public) would move on soon enough

I believe CS has an agenda, like many when retelling an argument from their side and making ridiculous, sensational comments like that will grab headlines and sell his book

I don't rate him morally and would take everything with a pinch of salt. He's using a devastating moment in his family life to make money, knowing its extremely unlikely the royal family will argue against his claims or tell their side (the most you get it recollections vary statements, I imagine to avoid back and forth mud slinging)

If it wasn't about money then he wouldn't accept a penny from sales of the book, he said after she died that he would never cash in on his sister, seems that sentiment doesn't last a lifetime

What is disgusting is Earl Spencer trying to boost his book sales with sensationalist claims in order to capitalise on his sister's death.

The conference at Dumfries House was immensely important for everybody's future but Spencer chose to derail it's impact for his own financial gain.

Even if he did say it, it was in a moment of shock, grief and stress. Have you never said something awful in the heat of a moment? It was 30 years ago what good is it going to do bringing it up now other than hurting his nephews? Sometimes it's best to let sleeping dogs lie.

@BakeOut Well, I can tell you if that someone had said that about my sister who just died I would have punched him in the face and told EVERYONE what he had said. Media especially. The fact that he just sat on that for 29 years proves to me that it's a lie. No normal person would not have said anything at that point. Coïncidence that Harry just came back? Or has he been in contact with his uncle and planned that showing his dad's moral corruption would help his case in reuniting with the people?

But I don’t think that someone who I don’t know is cruel because someone else who didn’t like him at the time, and doesn’t like them now, twenty nine years later, claims that they said something three decades ago in a tumultuous time.

Spencer did fuck all for Diana when she was alive, couldn't wait to have her back when she was dead though and he could charge people to stare at the island. Althorp was not really her childhood home either.

Diana and KC were on good terms when she died. Diana would have hated what he is doing but I expect he has another divorce to pay for.

I don’t believe he said it - I don’t think he was necessarily upset that she died, but nobody could have thought that Diana, such a prominent cultural figure, would be forgotten any time soon.

I don’t doubt that he put the boys behind the coffin to protect himself from the public.
He covered his brother’s crime or turned a blind eye for years to the criminal sexual abuse, he is not an honourable person.

You could tell at the time Prince Charles(as he was then) was upset it was etched on his face for the world to see. I highly doubt he would say something quite so crass about his children's mother either.

Funnily enough, Diana's sisters don't seem to have the same issues as Charles Spencer but then they don't have 4 divorces and ex wives to pay for. It was Diana's sisters at the Christening of Archie as well he was no where to be seen.

If he cared as much as he says he does he wouldn't have written a book that will cause hurt to her loved ones.

Do you really think they were on good terms? She was involved with a person of colour. I was a teenager but I remember the fear and headlines,
her title had been stripped, she was paranoid and afraid.

Those close to her have confirmed that. Dodi was a summer fling, the hysteria was tabloid crap and she still had the title of Princess just not HRH due to being divorced.

What a lovely man Spencer is, to selflessly withhold Charles’ comments for 30 years and only telling the world when he has bravely written a book that he wants to sell millions of copies of.

If someone said something similar about my sister immediately after her death, you’d have heard about it then, loudly. Considering the Earl was so outspoken at the time, I do wonder why such a heartless comment was ‘overlooked’ without acknowledgment.

Spencer's motivation may well be utterly self-serving but that doesn't equate to it being a lie.

I don’t. He’s crashed through his whole life making poor decisions and being a git generally. He has no relationships with his children and him and his sister were hardly close it seems.

He is selling a woman who died thirty years ago up the river.
