Just wondering what others do with this.
DS7 is a complete bookworm. He’s been an early riser since birth and very rarely sleeps past 6am. He also gets v emotional/ratty/impulsive when tired (hard relate 😂). From this it seems clear to me that he needs a decent amount of sleep and therefore we've traditionally been quite protective of bedtime.
Lately though he’s been struggling to fall asleep, particularly if reading a juicy book. I initially assumed he was just needing less sleep as he gets older (and we have pushed bedtime back a bit), but his emotional regulation/impulse control seems to be getting worse, and he's waking earlier again.
At the moment, he can go upstairs and read whenever he likes after dinner (we eat early, usually around 5pm), but lights out is 8pm. If he wants me to read to him, he needs to be ready by 7, we read for 30–40 mins and then he has some time to read to himself until 8.
DH thinks we should just put him to bed and leave him to it (after stories with us if he wants them). That way he decides when to stop reading, and if he’s tired the next day, that's the consequence and he'll eventually learn how much sleep he needs. If he’s sassy at school or moody with his friends because he’s tired, that’s part of the lesson too.
Im usually a big fan of opportunities for independence but in this instance he’s SEVEN. IMO we should be holding the reins for a few more years, particularly as he genuinely seems incapable of sleeping in. In fact, as mentioned the later he goes to bed, the earlier he seems to wake up.
So what do you think?
YABU: I’m being overly strict and should let him experience the consequences until he learns.
YANBU: DH is expecting too much self-regulation from a 7yo and we should be enforcing lights out a while longer yet
