I fell and fractured my ankle a week ago. I was told it’s a stable fracture to be treated like a sprain. I also really tore up my knee, which has been very slow to heal.

A week on and I’m still incredibly swollen, bruised and my ankle is becoming more and more painful. My knee is still very sore, the actual skin is numb but I have pain at the base and top of my kneecap. It also feels a little unstable and I am getting sharp stabbing pains to one side of my kneecap.

My GP isn’t interested. They say that I have to go to physio if I need, as it’s a muscular injury.

Physio has an eight week minimum wait for a video consultation.

This obviously isn’t an A&e situation (shamefully I did go to A&E for the initial injury because it had a very short wait time, it seemed to be a quiet time of day!), and they wouldn’t take a look at my knee anyway as it’s a “superficial injury”.

Minor injuries is now by appointment only in my area and appointments are gone within a minute of opening.

I’ve tried the pharmacy for the graze that isn’t healing but they just say to dress it and keep it clean and it’ll heal “eventually”.

I feel like I’m being turned away at every turn but I’m in so much pain, I’m left feeling sick by lunchtime because my ankle is that sore, and by the end of the day I can’t stand walking around. I have basic physio exercises from my last sprain years ago but I can’t do them, but I can’t be seen by anyone.

Please don’t suggest a private physio assessment, it’s not within my budget at all. AIBU to just feel despondent and like I can’t get help anywhere?

111 should be able to signpost you and book an appointment at miu if needs be.

Needmorelego · 17/09/2026 15:44

@ihowlforyou what are you actually saying to the triage at A+E?
Are you keeping it simple?
"I was seem here X amount of days ago about my foot injury. It has got worse and I can barely walk. My knee doesn't seem to be healing and I am worried about infection. I am living off a diet of pain meds"
I honestly cannot believe they would turn you away if that's what you are saying.

Yes they said as it’s been so long since the injury MIU is better placed to deal with it. MIU can’t override their booking forms, apparently.

The MIU is a walk in (pardon the pun) centre .. just go in, you don't need an appointment. Don’t over complicate it, just tell them you have an injury that is not healing, in fact is worse. We have never been turned away from MIU.

No, our MIU is by appointment now and we’ve been warned that walk ins are strongly discouraged and will face incredibly long waits.

You’re either being fobbed off or misunderstanding. Whether you walk in or get an appointment, you will be seen. Ring up again and don’t overcomplicate it.

SKLM · 17/09/2026 16:09

@ihowlforyou where are you geographically? This sounds terrible.

So it's not by appointment only. You will still be seen and will just have to wait. So why don't you do that?

Needmorelego · 17/09/2026 16:17

@ihowlforyou if MIU does accept walk-ins then go there. Even if you have a long wait.
If they refuse you say you want it in writing to show to A+E.
Or ring 111 (NOW) because they might be able to do an appointment.

I’m not thick. I can understand what they’re saying just fine. Essentially they want to ease pressures so they make walk in patients wait absolutely hours

I understand that but it makes no difference to your situation. You either go and wait and be seen or you sit at home and wait for the issue to resolve itself. What you can't do is complain that nobody will help because clearly, you have an option of going to MIU.

A+E could take hours too.
But this needs to be sorted.

But that's a lie isn't it, OP can walk, in fact she is walking 5000 steps a day when she has been advised medically to rest it for 4 weeks, what are A&E supposed to do, she's been told it's an avulsion fracture which needs to be treated like a sprain and left to heal by itself, rest ice, elevation.. she isn't doing anything to let it heal, she is doing the opposite, and not even using crutches or a boot to protect it.

Obviously the knee needs looking at if it is as bad as she is saying (weeping pus etc), but that isn't what she seems to be trying to get medical attention for?

Her ankle injury will take 6-8 weeks to even start to feel better and may be painful for up to 3 months, it has only been a week since it happened!

This is really your current predicament. Either you go as a walk-in to MIU (or call 111 and perhaps get them to make an appointment for you) and wait to be seen, or you make a GP appointment for tomorrow (taking the day off work!!!! the horrors!!!) and get seen there.
If you choose to do none of that, you're back to square one and you get to keep everything as it is and suffer the consequences (both short- and long-term ones) and continue moaning about how no one wants to help you and "the system" is set up to thwart your best intentions.

Needmorelego · 17/09/2026 16:36

@SandyHappyPerson yes she can apparently walk but it hurts and she is struggling.
I would describe that as "barely being able to walk" personally.

it hurts and she is struggling.

She's got an avulsion fracture! with a bad sprain and a knee injury of course it hurts to walk around!, no one is minimising her injury or disputing the seriousness of it, she's been through the wringer.

It doesn't mean A&E misdiagnosed her or there's anything they can do now. She is not following the medical advice she has had, and she is not doing anything to make her situation better, she could be walking on crutches or using a boot to keep it more stable, which would aid healing and make it not so painful, but she is refusing because 'that isn't what she was told to do" no, because she was told to rest instead, and that is what she should be doing.

Stomping around on it doing 5000 steps a day, unaided and not resting it or keeping it elevated or icing it, is of course going to make it feel worse!!

She's been to A&E, she's had an xray and a diagnosis, lots of people on this thread and the previous thread have said what she needs to do as they had the same injury, A&E have advised what to do for best healing, she's completely ignored their advice, so why people pushing her into going back again seems nonsensical to be honest, she needs to follow the advice she has already been given!

AFigureWalks · 17/09/2026 17:27

If you can’t call in sick, please demand to work from home with your leg up.
Use the PALS website to tell them about your problem and being turned away by various services. Don’t underplay it. They usually will get things moving.
I hope you are better soon.

Imdunfer · 17/09/2026 17:34

I'm sorry but at this stage this is absolutely the epitome of wasting NHS time.

OP has been told to rest a sprain and will not rest it.

There is no call to go back to a&e or to MIU or fracture clinic until she has done what she has been told to do for a week or two and found that it is getting worse not better.

I've sprained more ankles that I can count in my life due to hypermobility and ADHD and Holmes Adie at the same time. They swell alarmingly. They hurt like hell. They go black and purple. I couldn't weight bear each time for at least a week, usually longer.

The OP needs to do what she has been told to do.

cowandplough · 17/09/2026 18:10

I think you should insist on an X RAY. I had a similar injury 20 years ago
Did nothing about it, have now got arthritis, discovered I had previously broken 2 bones
Don't let it go, make a fuss.

Itsthewoluff · 17/09/2026 18:30

The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Basically you’ve got to force them to take notice of you. So what if they think you are making a nuisance of yourself? You know you need help. Get it! Only you can do something about this. You’ve turned down everyone’s suggestions. Insist on being helped.

someone I know was struggling on for weeks, eventually had another xray and was operated on immediately due to the initial misdiagnosis.

She is not following medical advice to treat it.

She’s had one but she’s not following advice and continuing to do 5000 steps a day rather than rest it

longtompot · 17/09/2026 21:33

I'm sorry you are still suffering @ihowlforyou . I posted on your previous thread about injuries and their potential to develop into chronic pain if not treated properly.
My dad had a fall recently and properly grazed his knees, amongst other injuries. His knees weren't healing properly and he went to see either his gp or a pharmacist and he was prescribed an antibiotic cream as he had an infection in his knees.
I think you need to speak to your GP and see if they can refer you on to a suitable hospital department. I am sorry work are being so awful with regards to this.

onetwobucklemyshoethreefourknockonthedoor · 17/09/2026 21:48

I hope you are feeling better. I can’t imagine the pain. Sorry I have no other advise but if your pain meds aren’t helping and you are in pain through out the day I would get seen. Watch out if you have a high fever or signs of infection. Look after yourself
